MotoGP 2019

Brad Binder starting second tomorrow in Moto2. Hopefully that position is indicative of the pace of the bike underneath him and not some one lap qualy flattery.
 
This Fabio chap has got some rockets on that bike... Imagine him on JL99's bike

Marquez has Dovis number but am excited to see what Suzuki + Yamaha can do tomorrow.
 
I didn't know Rossi was still racing.. :eek:

I should watch this more.
 
Well deserved 2nd place for Brad.
He should teach brother Darryn "Dive Bomb" Binder that a race isn't 15 laps. He can have some great results if he kept his cool more often.

Darryn is so frustrating. He rides like a man possessed but just can't stay on his bike. This is also his 5th full-time season in Moto3, so by now you'd think he'd have refined his riding a bit.
 
Meh, Marquez dominated FP2 (and was second in FP1 behind Quatararo). Think it's going to be a case of everyone fighting for second this Sunday at the Sachsenring.
 
Brad warming up to a win soon I reckon. Looks like KTM have sorted their frame out.
 
Brilliant ride by Brad.
No real need to comment on Darryn. I'd be as surprised as the commentary team will be if he goes on to finish another race this season.
 
Missed all the racing yesterday as I was on the golf course but yeah, fantastic stuff from Brad! Hopefully he can get his qualifying sorted so that he can mix it with the leaders from the start. I'm sure that having to push so hard to get to the front from his position on the middle to back of the grid every time is taking it out of his tyres leaving him with no grip to challenge.
 
Binder in talks with KTM over 2020 MotoGP™ move

KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer confirmed to MotoGP™ pitlane reporter Simon Crafar that the Austrian factory are currently in talks with Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Brad Binder about promoting the South African up to the MotoGP™ class in 2020.

It was recently reported in the German press that Binder will make the move to the premier class next year, however, Beirer denied a deal was already in place by saying “there is no signed contract”. However, the pair continue to have talks over the possibility of Binder becoming the first South African MotoGP™ rider.

Despite a difficult start to the season for all KTM Moto2™ riders, Binder continues to lead the way for the factory after a first podium of the year last time out in Assen, which promoted him to eighth in the World Championship.

Add that to his Moto3™ World Championship in 2016 and four Moto2™ victories en route to third place in the World Championship in 2018, the 23-year-old has shown he has premier class pedigree.

“I can comment that the German-speaking website was pretty fast,” said Beirer while talking to MotoGP™ pitlane reporter Simon Crafar during FP2 at the Sachsenring. “But we are thinking that way and we used an option with Brad to make sure he’ll be with us for next year. So, that option was used already some time ago but that was purely for Moto2.

Not sure how he is going to fit in. Works riders Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco and Tech 3 rider Miguel Oliveira are all signed with KTM through 2020. Hafiz Syahrin's deal with Tech 3 is up at the end of 2019, but he has a ride because the Malaysian government backs him at Tech 3 and the team principal is Malaysian, so shuffling him out may prove difficult. On merit Syarhin doesn't deserve a MotoGP ride but that's never stopped commercial deals from keeping riders in the sport before.

Anyway, I hope Brad has a strong second half to the season and gets a few wins. Alex Marquez's championship to lose though.

It would be great to see Brad in MotoGP, but not with KTM.
I'd like him to replace Joan Mir at Suzuki or Jorge at Honda but that's obviously wishful thinking :)

In the hands of Pol, KTM are making strides.

He's been in the top-10 five times this year. He only made the top-10 once last year and that was a fortuitous podium at the last race when the rain came down. He has 56 points this year with 10 rounds to go. His entire tally for last year was 51. He's on course to match his combined 2017 & 2018 points tally, so they are making strides.

I think KTM look worse off than they are due to the fact that Johann Zarco has been a huge disappointment. He has 16 points, rookie Oliveira on the satellite KTM is on 15. Syahrin shouldn't be in MotoGP and Oliveira can be forgiven as he is the rookie, but there is no reason why Zarco shouldn't be matching and probably surpassing Pol as he is the one with the big reputation.

Problem is they're not competitive at all, despite Pol's points tally.

I agree on Zarco and Syahrin.
Zarco 's been poor and not living up to his talent. He was so much better on the Tech 3 Yamaha although he excelled at qualifying more than he did at racing. But he looked far from happy when he came into the pits at the German race and I'm sure he'll sign for any other team without thinking twice.
As for Syahrin, he doesn't belong in any of the 3 classes.

But they're improving. Its only their 3rd year in the class. From always outside the top-10 to regularly getting in there.

I get where your concerns are coming from though. He moves up to MotoGP with KTM, the bike doesn't progress any further and he gets 2 or 3 seasons hovering around 10th - 15th before he is spat back out of the category. He's always going to battle with one thing though; his backing is from Red Bull and KTM, so he is not in the position of someone like Karel Abraham who has never done much in the sport but has tons of backing from sponsors back home. If its not KTM and/or Red Bull, not many options for him at the moment.

KTM signs Moto2 rider Binder to Tech3 MotoGP squad for 2020

Moto2 frontrunner Brad Binder will make the step up to MotoGP in 2020, after signing a one-year deal with KTM to join the satellite Tech3 team alongside Miguel Oliveira.

Binder made his grand prix debut in 2011 in Moto3 having won a race in the KTM-backed Red Bull Rookies Cup, before winning the lightweight class title with the Austrian marque in '16.

He moved to Moto2 with KTM the following season, and won three races in the class last year on his way to third in the standings.

He currently sits eighth in the championship following back-to-back podiums in the Netherlands and Germany.

"It is incredible to have this opportunity," said Binder.

"I want to say a huge thank you to KTM, Red Bull KTM Tech3, my manager and my family for helping me get to the premier class and to be able to give it a try.

"It is an amazing feeling right now and a dream come true.

1-year deal is a little rough. Excited though.
 
Fantastic news! Motogp.com says he's the first South African to compete in the premier class since 2000. Guy by the name of Shane Norval. I didn't follow motorcycle racing back then so I haven't heard of him. Seems he only competed in 5 races that year though.

I just hope they can develop that KTM a bit faster for him!
 
I sort of watch snippets as I come across them and never really the full races, but from somewhere I had the 2019 Qatar GP which I downloaded from somewhere, don't remember.
Decided to watch, was bloody brilliant, right up to the last damn corner I say, cheers to 40 year old Rossi for going up to 5th I think all the way from 14th on the grid.

/Wonders why I don't watch more often.
