MotoGP 2020

In terms of hard breaking into a tight corner, it's no different than a lot of corners preceded by long straights on the calendar (think turn 15 in Sepang or turn 1 at Mugello). I hesitate to use the phrase 'knee-jerk reaction', but you do have to wonder if this has been blown somewhat out of proportion. Yes, it was a horrific accident and the riders are lucky to have escaped relatively unscathed (both physically and mentally) but was this not just a freak accident?

The real problem is actually the kink/turn 2. A crash in the kink - as we saw - throws the bikes/riders straight in to the path of people exiting turn 3. If the track was straight this would not be an issue.

It is rare, but it has also happened in F1.

If you look at the track, if there is an accident at each corner you get the general idea of where the fallen riders will go. A crash or fall at the kink/turn 2 can direct you back across the track at turn 3. Yellow/orange lines are the eye-balled trajectories of fallen riders/bikes.

The riders are not happy with this track and have been warning about something bad since 2016 when they first started racing here. I think the solution is an alternative layout for bikes. A number of tracks have different layouts, with the bike layouts often avoiding a corner deemed to be too dangerous. The Red Bull Ring has a lot of spaec to utilise on the inside of turn 3. You could add a new piece of track for bikes while keeping the rest for F1. Again my paint skills; red is the new piece of track for bikes. Straightens the kink and removes the hairpin.
