If I want to ride a motor cycle / scooter, what licence do I need?

How does one go about getting one?

Please keep in mind that I got my own motor car license shortly after Henry Ford developed his Model T, so go gently on me!

You can ride a 125cc and lower with a learners licence.

Not sure how long the learners licence lasts though?
 
How exactly does one go about getting a learner's these days?

What do I need to know in terms of material?
 
Code A.

Write learner's. Pass. Make appointment for pass-out test. Pass. Get lisence within 6 months of successfull pass-out.

PM me your e-mail address and I will mail you the official test that must be done for a successfull pass-out.
 
There are lots of threads on this in the motoring section, but basically:

1) Do learners for code A or A1 (same as for a car, but the controls section (8 questions) are different - it's really basic though)
2) Learner's lasts 18 months, I think
3) Do your licence test - if you do it on a bike <125cc, you get an A1 licence, and can only ride bikes <125cc. If you do it on a bike > 125cc, you get an A licence and can ride any size bike.
 
Phone your nearest traffic department and ask them when you can book for a leaners license test. Buy a learners license book at CNA or another news agent / bookstore, the learners book used to be yellow.

Learners lasts 18 months allowing you to ride up to 125cc's with NO passengers

How sure are you about that? I dont think the law would change just because your 90 but it is still your first time on a bike :D

He's correct. ;)
A motorcycle learners license allows anyone over 18 to drive any motorcycle regardless of engine capacity - the only restriction is that you cannot take a passenger..
Under 18's are restricted to max 125cc.

AFAIK over 18's with a learners can indeed ride anything. I was riding a 650cc with a learners and they didn't have a problem with it. Also a friend bought a new 650cc Dakar - didn't have a license so he had to do his learners first for insurance and finance purposes.

I did the same and if you are 90 like I'm probably 103.

You need to book a learners - that took me 3 months - you then need to pass - really simple, though I had to guess a few questions....

As the people said, with your learners you can ride any bike just can't take passenegrs and its valid for 18 months - the problem is I can't get a booking for licence, so I don't know if 18 months is long enough for the learners.

PS I got a brand new baby 125cc Honda for 10K - when I get brave will get their 250cc and when I get really brave will buy something that goes VROOOOOOOOOOM

Just be aware... if you do the licence test on a 125cc, you'll have to redo your learners and licence test when you want to move up to the 250cc. I'd recommend borrowing or renting a 250cc to do your licence on.
 
Dont you think thats its stupid that a 16 year old with a learners can only ride a 125cc max while the 90 year old bat with a learners can wind burn his bald spot on a 500cc with only a learners? I would rather have the 16 year old on the 500cc! Isnt that age discrimination? :D
 
I did the old code 01 and code 02.

Code 01 fell away after I got my code 02.

This means I can drive any size motorcycle I want :D:D:D:D

Remembering how I drove my CG125 when I was 16 which was only 8 years ago (less one month ;)) .. I'm pretty sure that I would not be comfortable at all with 16 year olds on 500cc bikes :eek: I'm not even sure I'm too comfortable with 18 year olds.. :p

Teenagers are terribly unstable people.. :p

I highly doubt that a 90 year old who has never driven a motorcycle would suddenly want to.. and even if he did, I doubt that he would go out to "wind burn" himself.. ;)

As with cars. You don't need a licence to be able to buy a vehicle, but you do need one to be able to test drive it, drive it home, and of course, drive it in general.
