Moved into a new flat, unstable internet connection. Plz help :(

Hi all,

Apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I just joined this forum.

I just moved into a new granny flat (connected to the main house), which was advertised as having unlimited high speed WiFi. Basically there's an ethernet cable coming in through the roof that's connected to a Telkom router next to my bed, that's emitting a WiFi signal for my phone/laptop etc. I assume the other end of the ethernet cable is plugged into the landlord's router in the main house. The problem is the internet cuts out every few hours, and the only thing that can get it going again is to turn off the router in my room at the wall a few times (though sometimes this isn't even a guarantee and it takes quite a while to get going again). The landlord told me to keep the cable plugged into ethernet port number 4 of the router. And what's super weird is that when I plug the ethernet port directly into my laptop it only works sometimes. Sometimes the internet will stop working via wifi, so I'll unplug the ethernet port from the back of the router and plug it straight into my laptop and it'll work as a wired connection. BUT, sometimes it's the complete opposite! Right now, for example, the wifi is working (there's a live internet connection) but if I unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into my laptop there's no internet!! (I know because I tried 5 minutes ago).

So bizarre.

Seriously, many points of failure here. Is the ethernet suspended? In good nick?

Does you gateway change? What's the connectivity at the main house? Fibre?

No idea what suspended ethernet means haha! The cable does look a bit old, to be honest. Not sure if that's the issue. Also don't know what a gateway is lol. I'm a complete noob.

I'm guessing they have fiber in the main house, because when it works it's pretty quick. I get about 25 Mbps on speedtest.net. I just wish the damn connection would stay on.

My biggest concern is I start online lectures this week, and I can't afford to have a buggy connection

Sounds like a dodgy router has been ruled out..

That leaves the ethernet cable from the main house, whatever the landlord has on the other end of that equipment wise and whatever is going on with the landlord internet connection..

You will have to get the landlord involved here and hopefully they know what they are talking about...

Use speedtest.net to see who isp is , then we could run win-mtr too see where problem is

open a shell/cmd window and run:
ipconfig /all

Additionally, running this during a disconnect would be helpful:
pathping 8.8.8.8

@WAslayer - Yup, that's a good summary. Unfortunately the landlord is throwing his hands up at this stage.

@thehuman - Ran the test and looks like Telkom is the ISP. There's a number under where it says Telkom, looks like some kind of IP address. Should I post it here?

@rustypup - I ran ipconfig /all, and will try the other command during the next disconnection.

Start by finding out from your landlord what the main connection is and how it is being extended to your flat. A photo of the RJ 45 plug will be helpful in assessing how well that has been done. What type of LAN cable is it?
What is made of Wi-Fi router?

Just gets weirder and weirder...

I just asked the landlord to switch the cable to a different port on his router in the main house. Now my phone won't reconnect but laptop hasn't skipped a beat and is working perfectly (yep, they're both connected to the wifi router next to my bed, I double checked). Never had problems connecting to wifi with this phone before, so I'm sure that's not the problem right now

What the **** is an RJ111 plug?
I know of RJ11 as in old school telephone and RJ45 as ethernet, but RJ111?
