This isn't the fault of Halle, but blame can be laid at the feet of Disney as this was a deliberate decision. Now Halle will be used as a shield should the movie turn out to be bad.

Considering how many changes the movie made to the Hans Christian Anderson story, moaning about changing her skin colour just seems so dreadfully petty. And making it about a betrayal of the original story is f***ing stupid considering that it's a remake of a cartoon that made massive changes to the source material.

I'm saying they are making such changes deliberately. In short, Disney is devoid of ideas and rehashing an already adapted movie, just by swopping a character race or gender deserves to be mocked. What does it add beside some cheap publicity? As mentioned any critique of the movie itself will now be labelled as some kind of -ism, a convenient shield, as we've seen ad nauseam in the last few year. Those types of vacuous articles have been making the rounds since the initial casting was announced in 2019. The articles blew the whole faux controversy completely out of proportion, which resulted in yet more free press for the movie. This ties in with their initial reason for doing so.

The fact that the original movie deviated from the story isn't relevant.

Of course it's a deliberate change, they could have had Halle Berry voice a white Ariel just as easily, why do you think that it's automatically a bad decision? And of course Disney is out of ideas. they where out of ideas with the very first of these live action remakes.

Most of the live action Disney movies have been critical panned, especially the Lion King, do you really think people won't dare criticize it just because it has a black lead?

Then why did you mention that fact that the original story was Danish if not to make a not so subtle hint about the race of the original character? If changes to the original story aren't relevant you probably shouldn't have brought it up in the first place.

In an animation she could yes, and it does happen both ways, but it would be odd in a live action movie such as this. Never said Halle is a bad decision, I just don't trust the motives behind said decision.
I'm glad I'm not required to watch these live action remakes :sick:

Exactly, why does it matter? Many of the casting calls these days specifically call for certain demographics, partly due to ESG requirements. Some people seem to believe it matters quite a bit, Mariah Carey said “My kids and I are so excited for the emancipation of Ariel" :unsure:
Criticising cartoon characters is slightly different than ones containing real people. As mentioned this has happened many times already when we have mediocre movies (Star-wars trilogy, Ghostbuster 2016, etc.)

Because some incorrectly claimed that Halle looks just like the OG, which is odd, others claimed that since the story is set in Jamaica the casting is now more appropriate.

Yes. I'm all for diversity but why not tell new and interesting stories. All these remakes are going to be **** because people already liked the first one. Most of them were flawed and included "racist" ideas. Call it a sign of the times and move on.

There is a double standard for certain things a person of a certain race can say and the other can't. My example makes that clear.

Hah no. There are many dishonest people out there using that as an excuse.
Likewise just as many clueless people falling for this claptrap.

Just go look at articles that pop up, over the last decade or more, if this happens in the opposite direction to highlight the hypocrisy. For instance Disney had to redo scenes in Wreck it Ralph 2, because people were "outraged" that they changed the look of princess Tiana :rolleyes:
Anyway nothing stopping Disney from creating more characters as opposed to changing existing ones. If they cast Black Panther as a white guy I'll likewise raise my eyebrows.

Anyway I'm done trying to explain basic concepts to people that refuse to understand. This is also not the correct thread for such discussions.

Oh I understand it very well actually, are you aware of the implicit racism of it? Superficial skin colour representation instead of actual character attributes.
Anyway swapping out existing characters isn't the way you go about it. Unless a ham fisted, no creativity approach is your only recourse ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
