I have been a big BB fan for the three years that I have had it.

However, I just cannot ignore that the Galaxy S2 offers so much now that I am not sure the Bold 9900 is worth it.

Have any of you BB fans moved over to Android and if so is there anything I should consider? At the moment the only considerations I have at the moment is the Bold 9900 and the Galaxy S2.

I did that move Shred (to the SGS2) and I have no regrets. It's easier than you think. For those of us used to the great BB Bold keyboard the ones available for Android come as close as it will ever get. I've loaded a "two-thumb keyboard" and it works really well. I miss the reliability of BBM, that's for sure, but I do get along with WhatsApp and Viber. Just be VERY aware of the data costs these Android devices can incur ... and then there is the sensitive issue about a much reduced battery life that comes with all the nice features. It takes some discipline and a few apps to control data consumption when one is used to the BB's eat as much as you can BIS.

BB 'Death!

Been on a 2 year contract with the yellow team ... and on a BB for that matter. This is my 4th BB in that period.
IMO .... RIM has a huge innovation problem, its slow and not as 'open' as you'd like it to be if know what I mean.
My next phone, HTC Desire S ....hello Andriod

I did it a year back. Just missing the Bold keyboard and the free data, but other than that Android beats it hands down. But I think I will get the BB9900 next as I already have a SGS and don't think the SGS2 is that much more of an improvement feature wise. Definetly has far better specs, but I can live with it.

Why not just get another contract.
I have three and can basically upgrade almost every six months.
BB is only good for the free data and social intergration. BIS/BES its only other draw cards.
Otherwise it sucks.
Android is the **** for everything. Prob is, you will need at least a home data connection as you will never stop exploring your phone.
From apps to customization.
From rooting to installing custom roms to give it a new look and feel, it's like having a new phone after each rom install.
Depends on your requirements.

My opinion, stay with BB, as I can see you don't really know much or don't tinker with your phine much.
Also, your data usage is gonna be expensive. Install juice defender with 3g watch dog to control how much you use.

But go get 'em Galaxy SII, you won't regret it.
After the purchase, visit the xda developer forums, and you will become a phone addict.

***And why exactly are you missing the BB, don't you still have the handset, just add BIS on prepaid***

I have so little time for toys as it is; I hope I wont become an addict...

Before my upgrade, I was undecided between a BB Torch and a Galaxy S II. Two things tore me over to Android however:
  1. Had a gander at my colleague's HTC Desire
  2. Having had to set up a friend's Sony Ericcson Experia Arc

I fell in love with the look and feel of Android and that sold it for me.

PS: Almost wanted to applaud when I saw the thread title :D

For me what I am worried about leaving BB is

* No need to worry about data usage
* BBM
* Instant messaging, email, contact sync, calendar sync doesn't drain the battery

Does anyone use the Galaxy S2 for business purposes here?

Well Google Talk is better than BBM for cross device compatibility - it works on BB, iOS, Android, and the PC. If you ask your BB friends to install Google Talk then your problem is solved. If you don't have wifi at home and work then data can be an issue. Vodacom's Top Up contracts (and I think Cell C) allow you to buy data bundles with inclusive airtime which solved the problem for me. Battery life on BB and Android are pretty much on par, assuming you're syncing a google/gmail account you'll have no problems, when it comes to other accounts Android isn't quite as great with syncing. With a top end device like the Galaxy S/S2 you can expect a day's usage (about the same as most Bolds and the Torch).

*Yes, you do need to worry about data usage. Only browsing is free, download you pay. And I can just imagine how exciting it must be on that small low-res screen. :p
*WhatsApp - cross platform and far more complete product than BBM. Also, Samsung has a new global messenger app in the works.
*And even less battery drain on a proper phone, e.g. Desire HD or Samsung Galaxy S/S2.

What were you saying again?

I'm going to change from 9700 to SGS2 in two weeks. I never use wifi with my BB and most months I use 600MB-1GB of Data. I'm scared.

Was in the same situation this week wrt upgrading a contract. SGS1 is still a very capable device and I would've just ended up flashing Galnet MIUI on the SGS2 as well. So I took the next best option after another droid and got an iPhone 4... Would never get a BB though, feels like going 10 steps back.

Personally I won't have a droid and a iPhone, it feels to similar. And as i already have a droid, and want something with a keyboard, the BB seems to be the best bet.

I use my SGS2 for business. Battery life and data use is a challenge (battery lasts me 10 hours with Juice Defender running so charger must travel ... and on the data front you're looking at 600 megs/m ... but it is fast data, not slow BIS). It does have many strengths though that beats BB handsdown. I even overcame my soft keyboard frustrations (Android's way better than iPhone).

Only 10 hours? Do you receive push email and do you have IM on all the time? Do you spend a lot of the time on voice calls?

Replicating what my BB used to do ... push email on etc.

I have had both and I don't know which one you should go for. The BB is more practical for you I think, but it is not going to be so pretty.
