Moving from iphone to Galaxy S2 - questions

Hey guys

I am most likely going to upgrade from my iphone 3G to the SGS2 (maybe tomorrow) and thought I would knock on this forum door for help/opinions.

I've had the iphone for a long time and am very used to it but the SGS2 deals are just way better and I look forward to the challenge of figuring out Android - I've never worked on it before.

Just two things :

1) Are there any tips for moving my current data (probably just sms's) over from the iphone to the android - for contacts I sync my iOS with Outlook which I assume I will be able to do with Android as well?

2) Something that is bothering me is the GPS. I am using the TomTom iphone app a lot and I don't see a TomTom app for the android market? Looks like the default google navigation system works well, but that uses a lot of data...which I didn't plan to add to my contract as at home I will be using wifi. Are there any decent navigation apps available that stores the maps on the phone (thus not using data) and if so, what do they price?

Oh and a number 3) Is there a teamviewer app for android? I use that sometimes as well.

I still have to do homework as this was a sudden decision this afternoon. Just asking here so that you clever people can save me some time. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Elimentals. I am reading through your "New to Android" blog post now. Shot for the effort you've put in so far!

Your welcome,

PS it kinda evolved into Full Catalog by now http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/397329-Android-useful-app-catalogue

On the Contacts, you can already start the 1st step by getting them into Gmail. Once you log into the phone with your Gmail password it will autosync the gmail contacts with your phone with people's pictures/numbers and all.

SMS's might be an issue, dont know if you can export them from iPhone to CSV but there is an Android SMS backup and restor app that can import via CSV files if they in the right format.

Oh and coming from iPhone, you might want to look at MIUI rom if you ever decide to flash. Its like Android and iPhone made babies personally I think its the best thing out, and Yes I also migrated from iPhone.

I have the Galaxy note and tho I love it, its not an iPhone.

It has taken be 3 months to finally get the thing working the way I like it, and it still crashes at least once a week and often I will check the phone and its asking me for my pin.
IMO its not as stable or reliable as my iPhone is. I'm not sure about the SGS2, but GPS is definitly not a strong point on the note.

Make no mistake its an awesome phone, and I would definitely recommend it to some people and have done so, but I think if you like the iPhone you may struggle with the change. If you like to fiddle and change things and so on then you'll probably love it.

The iPhone just works. Android is alot of work.
I converted my brother in law from the original omnia to the iPhone a few years ago. Now I show him the Note and he likes the device, but this is what he said

Why should I struggle to get the thing the way I like it when my iPhone is already there? Why must I go and buy all the apps I have already paid for again for another device?

The default maps app ( Googlemaps ) has a caching option that stores the basics of routes for future use even when you aren't near an internet connection. There are a few offline map type navigation apps to buy too. Why not buy a cheap bundle for 50-100 so you have data in a pinch?

You want "Sygic GPS Navigation" for your satnav needs. Whether you buy it or... erm... acquire it through more creative means is of course up to you, but it's pretty damn good.

I honestly dont get how people get their phones to crash? I have yet to reboot my phones for any reason but to flash a different ROM.

Can you please tell me how you git it to crash, and what does it do when it crash is it like a BSOD or something?

+1 I bought mine before I saw alternatives and before Google nav came to SA and love it.

You get Route 66 Navigation free with the Galaxy S2.

It has a nice boere-meisie voice and doesn't use internet data.

Ah? Bonus!

OT: Did you get the car dock with your SII? Looked quite nifty the little I saw of it when I sold the SII I got on upgrade... /OT

*edit*

Does Route66 remain accessible if you muck about with ROMs?

Thanks guys. Just realised I have a lot of reading and fiddling with it to do...

Will definately look at it. Screenshot on the website looks very much iOS - good option to ease into Android maybe.

The iPhone just works. Android is alot of work.

I hear you. Have to say that I am used to jailbreaking my iphone to set it up with tweaks etc so there was also some effort involved. My first choice would've been the iphone because I don't really have the time to play around with something new now, but the thing is just too expensive for similar hardware.

Why not buy a cheap bundle for 50-100 so you have data in a pinch?

I get 100mb a month for the first 3 months (I know that's not much especially since I'm still waiting for Telkom to come and install my ADSL) but yes, I will have to get a bundle.

That ses pool :)
I have another apk top site i prefer ;)

Oh, indeed it is. But the returns for wading in are decent enough. :D

Only app I'm desperate for that I've never managed to find is the SASOL birding guide. At R230 it's quite a smack for an app, but I suppose it's the same cost as a new paperback copy. Might as well spring for it, I suppose...

Question, is it possible to brick the SGS2 by playing around with rooting and installing/loading/flashing (or what do you call it) a new/custom rom etc?
