Moving to CT

Working hours have been specified as 7-4.

What would you say you have to net to live comfortably?

I commute from Kempton to Sandton/Illovo/Rosebank/Midrand atm, so I would say I'm kind of used to some traffic.

The norm for CPT is less salary and higher cost of living vs GP. If salary is almost double then go for it, just keep in mind that cost of living will also be higher.
The water situation is the big unknown in all of this, I'm not seeing people moving away from CPT because of this and property prices are not crashing yet, which tells me people are not really worried in the long term and trusts that government will pull a rabbit out the hat at some point.

Personally I'm not really a CPT person so the offer would have to be really extremely good for me to go live there, I for example won't do it for only double my salary,,, there are other places I will go for double my salary, but CPT isn't really my thing.

decent working hours ... if you cna start 630 -330 even better

you can rent anywhere in CPT from around 5k-20k or more for a 2 bedroom

and with that working hours traffic isnt that crazy.

you need to leave before 6 though

if you give us a budget for rent we can tell you where about is best

Well I'd like something like The Sandown as the Balwin places are really nice. Not sure if they overpriced compared to something else you could get for the same price ?

But probably between 10-14k. I have two little dogs so would like to find somehting with a little garden if possible.

for that rental why not look in the kenilworth or claremont areas

Well the lower the better obviously so I guess it depends. But the company will offer 1 months rent so during that time will give me sometime to look around where to go.

I just dont know what the nice/bad suburbs are.

kenilworth and claremont has lots of dog people and parks and bla bla

sandown is far from the CBD

With everybody going on about CBD traffic it is obvious none of you are aware how bad it is up country.

@op traffic is really not that bad here. The public transport system (MyCiti) is first class. I use to commute 50km one way for years using Golden Arrow (our version of Putco) without issue and was seldom late into the CBD from Somerset West. I drive in as I work from 6:00 - 15:00.

As for water, its a non event. You adjust quickly and water tariffs are not bad - actually anybody noticing a major difference deserves the penalty.

As for places to stay, first find something short term and then decide on what you like. Suburbs are extremely unique - also the only thing Capetonians are really classist on is the suburb they live in. You find it more with older residents than newer ones. I live in a suburb where people in my town look down up on us, well we are geographically the lowest part of the town, but outsiders all love the area.

So Amazon then.

Not sure I would want to ever commit to that Koolaid but I guess it looks good on a CV.

At least their office hours are so strange that traffic would never be an issue.

We've got a PI here

Well while we're speaking about them. Any opinions, thoughts ?

have only heard good things, never really spoken to anyone about how the work is.

Good salaries and good environment though

Few colleagues moved to they call centre departments, not sure if they have other operations here as well

Will be a hell of a change for me, going from Presales, Implementation to Supporting clients

Virtually their entire support structure is here for this time zone and others overlapping it.

Also who are you talking to exactly? It's worldwide news that their staff turn over is the highest of any company at any one time.

The reasons the salaries are good is because the work environment is insane.

Yup, this was one of the things that intrigued me. No more crazy after hours as you offload your workload to the next time zone. Or so it seems.

They have some software development positions: https://www.amazon.jobs/en/location...relevant&category=software-development&cities[]=Cape%20Town&distanceType=Mi&radius=24km&latitude=&longitude=&loc_group_id=&loc_query=&base_query=&city=&country=&region=&county=&query_options=&

Did apply once for intern position, but they're mostly looking for intermediate/senior.

Small chance we might meet, have friends there and sometimes get invited to go out with them after work as I am close by. (Specifically after sales support and lost packages support for most of them)

Talking with friends, most say it's a nice environment to work in, but they do work you quite a bit and are a bit extreme in their confidentiality policies.
E.g. you can't hang out in the cafeteria as a guest, warnings for not locking screen when away from the desk, not allowed to use your phone while at the PC, etc.
Pay wise, for what you do, it's quite good. Hours/workload are high there, that's why it's good on your CV as it shows that you can deal with stress.

Well the hours themselves are a bit silly and could be hard to fit into your "normal" lifestyle but it depends on the specific team and support channel.

There is a lot of work outside of our time zone, but in fairness that is on the standby roster side of things and not all that different in many other companies.

Look it's a good opportunity make no mistake, but just know that you will be working your ass off and have kind of a two year outlook instead of a permanent one.

That being said my perception is all second hand and it differs from one department to another. I know people who worked there very briefly and then a number who have worked there for a long time so it's not all bad but it also depends very highly on the type of person you are and how you slot into it.

This is a bit older but still valid I believe.

It's borderline insanity and the cloak and dagger stuff is even worse when you work with them externally.

Of the friends I have there I take the negative and multiply it by 10 to get to what I think is a real world perception because the Koolaid is VERY strong with all of them.

Jeez even the ones who have left there won't complain only quietly and to a point and then shut down.
