Just acquired iPad 2 Mini, wanting to offload iPhone 4 (iOS6) from some functions - number of Email accounts, etc. Couple questions:

1. What is the best way to transfer Email accounts, including passwords? I just discovered that I misplaced password to one Email account (password recovery methods are not working), my password is burried on iPhone. Heard something of keychain. iPhone do not have keychain option.

2. Have already downloaded some application to the iPad, then tried transfering data from iPhone, didn't like results, so started to prepare for full reset of iPAD. Surprise... Downloaded apps do not sync to the PC using iTunes as it did in the past. Fired up iTools, it says "iOS9 do not support moving apps". When this restriction was introduced? It was the most convenient feature in the past, saving tons of Internet data. Asking because my iPhone is going to be upgraded to iOS7 and I can't afford more such surprises...

3. What is final status of Whatsapp on iPad? It was possible to install in the past, but overheard that the current version refuse to work on iPad. BTW, Whatsapp cut me off in January on the iPhone, so no Whatsapp for now.

4. This iPad (A1490) supports most current OS. Which version is recommended at the moment?

1. Without the password you are skrewed.

2. Backup with cloud. If your apps don't support it, they were shyte apps to begin with.

3. Whatsapp at the moment is for iPhone only.

4. The current version of iOS is 10.2.1

Upgrade the iPhone to the latest version...I'm pretty sure it will do iOS7.

Then enabled iCloud Backup and let it run.

Keychain is under Settings > iCloud > Keychain

Not sure however if it won't require your password upon restoring, but this is the same for any other device.

Open new device and simply enter your Apple ID details and hit restore on the backup.

If you have iCloud Backup on then Apps don't sync by default which is kind of obvious why.

But if you make a full manual backup the Apps should copy...but don't quote me on that I can't used that cable nonsense since iCloud became a thing.

It was never possible, unless it was jailbroken.

Whatsapp requires some or other phone to work, then you can use it through Whatsapp Web and a myriad of third party Apps.

The latest one.

Thanks for reply, I did work hard, no progress so far.

I did full encrypted backup of the phone using iTunes. Then also from iTunes upgraded to the latest iOS (7.1.2). iTunes has crashed during the upgrade leaving phone in recovery mode. Was afraiding to restore from backup, TinyAmbrella helped kicking the phone back without losing data. The second attempt flashing iOS7 was successful.

Then I tried local encrypted backup and restoring on the iPad using iTunes. I received message that some ?apps? (not sure) are not compatible with iPad. In result contacts were transfered, some other settings and apps, but no data associated with apps were copied. Integrated mail app accounts were also not showing up, which is means *fail*.

Cloud. I hate cloud nonsence in general, but in this case Apple has made it intentionally to get free cloud space filled up very quickly and collect money for extra storage space. Ater signing to the cloud it makes Photos enabled by default, also Backup and Find my Phone. It doesn't remember preferences - if you have signed off and then signed in, you have to repeat customisation again.

Now is more painful: I enabled keychain, then proceded with manual backup to the cloud, I found there is no option for partial backup! These options are only available after full backup has started!!! I noticed that it gave estimated 4 hours, so interrupted backup. Now backup options are found hidden in the Storage -> Manage Storage. Here I discovered that Apple was going to backup my Camera Roll (another name for Photos) despite of Photos being disabled on the main page!!!. Huh, they love my Photos so much!!! I deselected unwanted components, it gave resonable backup space and completed backup.

Now is a problem. Not sure, but after signing in on the iPad to the same cloud account there is no option to restore. I did restore eventually, don't ask. However situation is the same as with local backup. Internal mail app hasn't been updated with iPhone mail accounts which means total*FAIL*. And less important, but frustrating - apps data not transfered. Any ideas?

The last question (if you are still reading this). Checking from iTunes for the latest software it says that current version 9.3.1 is the latest one. Checking from the iPad results 'failed'. Internet connection is not a problem, it happens every time. It looks like there is a newer version of software available for this device v9.3.5, while there is no version 10.x for Ipad Mini 2 as promised. Which one is the latest one for A1490 Model ME800HC/A?

I did reset iPad again and do confirm that and restoring iPhone 4 from the cloud or from encrypted iTunes backup do not transfer Email settings of the embedded mail app. Not at all. Not even mention passwords.

A mystery regarding iTunes not reporing the latest iOS version for my iPad has been resolved. It looks like version checking had been hardcoded in iTunes or the protocol accessing server is changed. I was using iTunes v12.1.3.6 - the most recent version compatible with Windows XP. It does work with iOS9 devices, but support is crippled somehow. After installing the latest version of iTunes on the computer running Win7, it picks up iOS 10 for an upgrade. However after a minute connection with server is lost repeatedly, had to use download manager to grab ipsw file (2.3GB).

Having iPad running iOS 10, I tried to repeat restoration from iPhone backup again. It looks like Apple has learnt something about the issue, as now I get a message:
If you restore this iPad from an iPhone backup, settings will not be restored
Solution is minimalistic I can say. At least with iOS 9 some settings had been restored correctly while some other do not.

Playing now with iOS 10. It turns out that most of improvements in the interface are linked to 3DTouch I don't have, but some features like revamped notification system are welcome. I am very surprised that Contacts app still do not allow grouping contacts - a feature I had 12-15 years ago on the Palm PC. :(
