any insight as to what might be the best player on the market in terms of the following: (Apple ipod, Zen touch, iRiver H3, etc.)

The menu structures
Physical Appearance
Battery life
Accessories
Price
Software
File Support
Weight

Yes I've read up on the,, but I'm hoping those of you who all ready own them can rate them?

Thanks.

1. iPod
2. iPod
3. iPod
4. iPod
5. maybe not iPod but youre paying for the other 7 :)
6. iPod - ok so I like iTunes but perhaps the Mac version is somehow better
7. iPod
8. iPod

Now which iPod depends on if you want video or is size more important, or capacity.

Bwana loves his iPod. iPod is currently the right choice as it is the industry standard - but - it's not the best out there. My wife has a Samsung YP-Z5F and it is a brilliant device (music + images, not video). I have two iPod Nano's and the Samsung has far superior battery life (42h), better sound, a better screen, and a good FM radio. To top it all music can be copy-pasted without working through iTunes. I believe for music the Samsung is better - but it is not widely supported and available. My wife bought her's at Samsung in Vodaworld.

iAudio. I'll have to check the model, but it has a 60Gb drive. I get good battery life, can use it as a portable hard drive, it is robust and the audio quality is very good.

To be fair my fondness was born out of necessity - nothing else is/was as well supported on OsX. :)

That's the thing ... support. iPod will work - and work well just about in any environment. But I remain upset that Apple sells the FM radio seperatly at a crazy R 500 - and then to top their arrogance they throw in a set of earphones that is exactly the same as the ones that came with the original product. They could have provided the in-ear types at least. I believe there are better products at better prices available - but the world has bought into Apple.

The other thing to consider is Audible. I have iPods because I use Audible. If you want to listen to books then go to Audible.com and see which devices are supported. The Samsung I mentioned earlier is not supported.

I would not go for Sony - sound is great but they try too hard to get people to buy into their own atrac format - which has never been accepted and never will. And loading Sony music software on a PC is risky.

Pity iRiver is so poorly supported in SA. They make excellent devices - but it is hard to find here - and repairs/backup is probably non-existent.

Like iPod but using iTunes is a hassle ... at least from what I've seen, always outsource that part of the process :D.

Really? A hassle?

Re Sony, I would go for the W850 or W880 any day if I require a walkman type phone. Here Sony has the edge IMO.

I also don't like iTunes. It's a bully. I want to manage my music my way - on any of my PC's without the manufaturer forcing me to do it his way. I have a desktop PC and a laptop - each needing iTunes on it with exactly the same music set-ups - and this irritates me. I want to drag and drop my music anyway I like on any machine I own.

I agree, I love my sonyericsson phone :)

So I know ipod is overpriced....but wholistically, can one say it's possibly the better option? ( nervously said at the risk of getting flamed....)
