MP3 Players

iTunes for us is a nice music manager - that's all. That is why I recommend something like the Samsung which is completely independant - working like any USB storage device.

You know the iPod works as a mass storage device right? Completely independent of iTunes.

I do yes -but it can't play any music transfered in such a way - whereas the Samsung (for example) does.

But then why not just ignore SonyBMG and sell everything else? SonyBMG will be the big loser very quickly.

That is what finally happened in Japan and Autralia after negotiations too too long. But SonyBMG controls a very, very big percentage of all major music

Wouldn't know - I like flexible playlists. ;) iTunes loads the music and I can use it in anyway I like. 30gb for music, photos etc and 30gb for mass storage.

Never could understand the benefit people claim from being able to transfer music that way. You have to open the device, burrow down into the right folder etc. instead of just importing it with software.

Different strokes I guess.

The problem with I tunes is using it over 2 different pc's. you just cannot. As far as videos is concerned, the format restrictions just suck.

yeah, I suppose... you can't share mp3s using iPod, cos they have there on file format stuff.... You can see and listen to the mp3z, but the names are changed to some arb ****....

The thing here is that you can upload music to your device from any PC anywhere without any additional software involved. This way one can manage his/her music anywhere on any PC. One can move music both ways. When travelling this means I don't always have to have my laptop with me to manage my music. I can convert and upload music from a CD on any PC anywhere if I were to buy a CD away from home or laptop.

Welcome to misconceptions about the iPod day . . . :D

Unless it is the shuttle you can. As long as they're running the same OS that is.

How does h264 suck? Its as easy as dragging and dropping to convert.

And both running iTunes - with the same playlists. iTunes wipes what has been loaded by another PC - and loads what's in iTunes on the new PC.

Yes - I thought both running iTunes was a given.
No - they dont have to have the exact same music playlists or libraries.

BTW - The restriction between operating systems is one of disk formatting.

arf9999 : Apple want to be in as many markets as possible. The problem is that they have to negotiate deals with the record labels each time. And SonyBMG is the sticking factor. They have held up the process consideribly. When the iTS launched in Japan and Aus last year, Apple launched without SonyBMG because the delays were getting that rediculous. They have since joined iirc
No offense, but with respect to SA this sounds like second hand cr@p and rumour. The only way SonyBMG would slow them down is to refuse to license tracks at what Apple was willing to pay, and that is their right - e.g. all the music companies are negotiating with Apple atm to change the 1 price iT model.

SonyBMG are not trying to stop ITMS, there is no reason for it, on the contrary, music companies want legal download services.

I also think that you misunderstand Apple's business model. iTunes is not a cash cow for Apple, it is a method to entrench hardware. The hardware sales return in South Africa is evidently too low to justify the investment of setting up the music store. If Apple could open up the European iTMS to South Africans, I'm sure that they would, because the investment would be negligable. Unfortunately due the arcane and convoluted licensing and royalty agreements in the music industry, this is not possible.

Having said that, I do hope that they do set up in SA soon, especially if they are forced to license their DRM to other manufacturers by the EEC, or discard it altogether.

If you set the iTunes on the second pc to manual mode you can add/remove songs and playlists on the iPod.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the responses, I've gone with the ipod, it's in my :D :D :D

well, thx bwana, I guess I just learned something.

Still prefer my Zen though.

arf9999 : I understand perfectly the iTS business model.

SonyBMG want legal music download. By they want variable pricing. Once iTS has entered a market, SonyBMG loose pretty much all say as to how it is priced thereafter. So they are getting very sticky about it before they allow their music to enter a market.
And it is really, really well documented. Just look it up instead of calling it hearsay

1. iPod
2. iPod
3. iPod
4. iPod
5. maybe not iPod but youre paying for the other 7 :)
6. iPod - ok so I like iTunes but perhaps the Mac version is somehow better
7. iPod
8. iPod

Now which iPod depends on if you want video or is size more important, or capacity.
