MTN 2GB Data bundle @ R189

I might be wrong but I think you can only buy bundles with purchased airtime and not the airtime you get every month. I had more tha R200 on my phone and couldn't buy a bundle. I went to MTN and purchased a R180 and R15 bundle and them purchased a 2GB bundle on my phone using *141*6#

Schweet so it works and its not some MTN trickery. Will try it tomorrow on a PayAsYouGo SIM. Thanks Piesang!

Thanks Piesang, will try tomorrow.

To confirm Piesang's findings...it works! Got my 2Gb!

Yes it does, forgot to post yesterday, you definitely need to load own airtime if on TopUp contract.
Only thing that got me a bit worried was the USSD reply saying "R389 has been deducted".
Quickly checked balance & only R189 was deducted.

Is this still going?
Just noticed it through fnb banking. Google gave some history, promotion ended then extended yada yada, which I don't really give a crap about, just want to know if it's still on or not.

or more simply put - YES / NO answers will apply.

189 for how long?

Hi Everyone.

I signed up for this on my contract phone. It was a bit of a mission. First I was told that its only available to Prepaid customer, then I was told that the special doesnt run at all, and the normal 389 price applies.

Eventually I managed to get it loaded at R189.
when my wife got her S3, she also wanted to sign up, and she did, BUT - she was told that the price will go up to 389 once the special is finished. I enquired and it was confirmed by a second MTN employee. If you sign up for this special, you will pay 189 for 2GB but in a month or two when the special is through, you will be paying R389 again.

That sounds wrong to me?? I dont think the average user interprets the special like that? I for one thought that signing up for the special, "locks" the price at 189.

Am I the only one who thought it would be 189 for the duration of my contract?

The 2GB @ R189 is just a promotion. Since the day it was introduced (advertised) they mentioned that it will only be available for a month or so. Then they extended it. Maybe they will extend it again. We will never know.

And yes, as soon as the promotion is finished which is likely to be the end of June, you will pay the normal R389 again. So make sure you buy a 2GB bundle before the end of the month. And also only buy the once-off bundle otherwise you will have to go through the trouble of cancelling the recurring bundle.

geez, that sucks, I would have left it and ended up paying 389 for months before realizing the price has gone up.
I have unfortunately signed up for the month to month deal (its loaded automatically) so I will have to go through the cancellation schlep when the price goes up again.

man, when are we going to see lower broadband prices filter through to 3G and more specifically cellphone data?

thanks for the update Piesang!

MTN announced today (9 May 2012) that it has extended its “2GB Internet bundle price slash promotion” by three months. The promotion will now end on 31 July 2012.

According to MTN South Africa general manager of consumer segments, Mapula Bodibe, the 2GB Internet is bundle is available to PayAsYouGo, TopUp and contract customers. “It can be purchased as a once off or on a recurring monthly basis, and comes with a 60 day carry-over period,” explained Bodibe.

MTN highlighted that existing MTN 2GB users who already have an add-on recurring 2GB bundle will also benefit from the promotion during this period.

“Once a customer reaches the 2GB cap, they will be informed accordingly via an SMS notification and their further usage will be charged at an ‘out of bundle rate’ of only 19c, which is also competitive in the market,” explained Bodibe.

“By offering the most attractive internet promotion on offer today – over a world class network – with high speed internet for just R189, this internet bundle is designed to cater to an array of customer requirements and addresses the fundamental need for real value,” MTN said in its press statement.

This 2GB for R189 prepaid data bundle competes against 8ta’s ‘Go 3 Gigs Big’ promotion which offers subscribers 2GB of “anytime data” and 1GB of “night surfer” data for R149.

While MTN’s pricing is slightly higher than 8ta’s promotion, it is significantly lower than Vodacom’s MyGig 2 Advanced prepaid pricing of R385. MTN also offers better value than Cell C’s 3GB Smartdata bundle priced at R400.

So it ends in 31 July 2012 right?

thanks. pity MTN is so pathetic though, not allowing you to buy this or any bundle from your monthly allotted airtime on anytime/topup. still worth it, im gonna get it this S3 is hungry.

Does vodacom and cell c allow bundle purchases with top up airtime?
I have over R1 000 worth of roll over airtime, and that is sadly only worth 500mb's.

Vodacom definitely do, don't know about Cell-C.
