My solution from when I was frequently travelling (with a simple SIM phone) was to put my MTN SIM in a cheap backup phone and the local SIM in my main phone.

Yeah i do the same although lately I'm just getting Airalo e-SIMs on the iPhone. At least I can use Whatsapp and then also our work phone has a VOIP app so I can make calls through it.

MTN advertises that VoWiFi is available on their network and I have read the entire thread to this point. Seems to be working for all Android users.
Thing is; I just ported from Cell C to MTN and whilst VoWiFi worked with CC (also internationally!) the MTN network does not respond to the VoWiFi setting on my phone. Customer Service seem confused that VoLTE is the same as VoWifi!
It has to be the network configuration because:
I have 3 different Android phones
I have 2 MTN SIMS
I have 1 Vodacom SIM
Wireless is Vumatel + MTS
The Cell C and Vodacom SIM's both cause the VoWifi icon to appear in all 3 handsets. Neither of the MTN SIM's do.
I have also tested using a different WiFi network (Vodacom in a 5G modem) and the MTN SIM's do not work.
VoLTE works perfectly.
I'm out of ideas...

ISP is the limitation for the reason you can't access vowifi.
It seems mtn have whitelisted only certain big isp's. (On fibre: Afrihost, cellc, vodacom, vox are the ones I'm aware of. On vodacom and cell c hotspots it also works)
Mts and websquad don't work afaik. Websquad tried to assist me but it was on mtn's side.

I also created a hotspot on another phone with an MTN SIM but although connected to WiFi provided from the MTN network, the phone fails to activate VoWiFi.
So, not the WiFi provider I think. Must be another peculiarity of this network.
I was going to go with Vodacom but their 5G is underdeveloped in comparison to MTN. Joosub falling asleep at the wheel?

This is where your voice call is connected to MTN over a wireless network rather than MTN cellular network (3G 4G etc).
It's a very useful functionality which helps out the network by not using it's cellular network which may be under load or off due to flat batteries in your serving cell.
Not to be confused with VoLTE.
If you want it, don't bother with MTN they are clueless about it despite advertising it on their website!
I can confirm first-hand Cell C and Vodacom support it, if your handset supports it.

OK, likely my last post on this topic.
MTN is not offering VoWiFi out of the box, or possibly at all. They claim it only works on certain handsets. I asked them for a list of supported handsets last week. No reply.
I will be leaving MTN as soon as my 1 month port period completes and moving to Vodacom.
Happy to move back to Cell C when they dump MTN as their network operator.
If anyone reading this thread does have MTN VoWiFi please post a response with your handset details and vague location. Thanks

I'm on mtn, have vowifi on my home (axxess) network, and basically any decent speed WiFi network anywhere, including various African countries.
I suggest you ask them if vowifi is active on your sim. Perhaps try their twitter support.

You need to call the call center and speak to someone, it may take multiple attempts because the majority of them dont have a clue about Wifi calling, I think its called something else on their system.
Ask them to read out the available profiles and then if something sounds familiar ask to enable it.

Thanks guys for the feedback that some of you have got it working. It confirms what I was thinking that it's has to be activated at SIM level and yet despite my rattling MTN'S cage very hard I've got nothing sensible from coverage or customer service.
I have decided that I can't deal with a company that makes life so difficult for me and spams me with all sorts of messages despite having every switch in notifications turned off.
Having just read the MyBB story about how MTN is the only network not to support RCS, well that's the just confirmation that this is not the network for me. I love how MTN thinks they can create a viable competitor to WhatsApp!
Just another 10 days to wait until I can port away to a company which technically at least, knows what they're doing.

It’s not good news.
Unlike non “we want to rip you off” networks like even Telkom - MTN is geoblocking the Wi-Fi calling to make sure you can’t use it outside of South Africa and they lose revenue on their insane roaming costs.
When the rest of the world touts a feature of Wi-Fi calling being the ability to use a local sim anywhere - MTN as usual make decisions in the interest of their bank account.
Which is why when my contract is up I’m moving. All the networks have similar quality these days so it comes down to which is giving you value for money. And it’s NOT MTN…
I’m not so sure that it’s normal everywhere. Three network in the UK for example looked at me like I was insane when I told them that Wi-Fi calling overseas was like a local call with Vodacom.
