So I took out a new contract with MTN last week, I am porting my Vodacom number to MTN. The courier came on Tuesday with the sim card. The next day I phone the activation centre, give them the details, and they say they will do it...

Now, two days later I decide to check on the status of what's going on, so I phone the activation centre at 3 o clock. I get a message saying they are closed, and the message then goes on to tell me that their office hours are from 8-5 on weekdays. Last time I looked Friday was a weekday. So why are they closed at three?

Now I phone the customer care as I don't know who else to phone. They say no for number porting I must now phone the porting centre. So I phone them and wait for 30minutes with no luck.

I phone the customer care back and ask why the activation centre is closed at 3 o clock. They say they don't know. So I then ask my query again. They say I must now contact MTN direct.

I phone MTN direct and tell them my story that i would like to inquire about the status of my activation. The guy picks up that nothing has been done and he says I need to talk to the person who sold the contract to me. He transfers me and I wait another 20minutes before putting the phone down and trying again. I phone MTN direct and speak to a different guy who straight away transfers me to the activations centre where I am greeted with them being closed.

So I phone MTN direct again. I speak to the guy I spoke to the first time round who says he needs to transfer me to the sales person again. He now says to me she is expecting my call. So I wait for another 15minutes before I am disconnected from them.

So I phone back.

The sales person answers! She then proceeds to tell me that the ONE porting specialist is not in as they have been on sick leave for two days and so NOTHING has been done and I have to wait till Monday now.

I feel so furious and frustrated knowing there is now nothing I can do.

Everybody knows that MTN is really bad on service - how come you missed that ?

And now, with their new system, they are really expensive as well !

Why bother ?

Should I complain on HelloPeter or will that be pointless?

Man if they could have just told me that the first time I called!!!

As an ex MTN data subsciber I can tell you that MTN's service is not crap, it is non-existant! They don't have customer care...

Service levels was the main reason for me leaving them, and Hellopeter will not help. I logged multiple complaints and received a quick but generic response from MTN thanking me for the complaint. But still no attemp to fix the problem. And then the agent at the shop was horrified when I wrote on my cancellation documentation that the reason for cancellations was "k#k" service levels. "Sir, you can't write that......". Well, I did.

Good luck, you might find yourself porting back again soon....

Your first mistake was leaving Vodacom.

From there, it was only downhill buddy, sorry to say...

I'm afraid I have to agree. Because you signed with MTN Direct, you are going to be stuck in this infinite loop of being transferred from this person to the next.

Nobody at MTN wants to take OWNERSHIP of a problem. It's much easier to just hit the "forward" button on an email, or the "transfer" button on a phone call. I've been waiting since August for a refund and I have k**ed out a guy 808 two months ago - NOTHING.

MTN Active's definition of a "closed query" is as follows:"Please be advised that your query has been forwarded to the xxxxx department for attention. Query closed."

If you have any service related problems with MTN - may the force be with you.

If not, they're not too bad.

Nah, believe me, i've delt with all of them , if there's a word for "the worst of the hopeless" then that is MTN. MTN makes Telkom look like a 5 star hotel in the Caribean..

I took out an extra MTN contract last year September and had to wait 2 weeks for activation. That time they said there was problems with the system. I'm also waiting since last year October for a refund due to their billing mess-ups. I ported my wife's contract to Vodacom last year June and have to say they're much better. I'll be porting my main contract also soon unless they wake up.

Some contract types allow you to cancel the whole thing if its within 7 days. Not sure if that applies here.

I don't want to cancel as it is a nice contract I am getting, Vodacom etc. don't offer anything as nice.
