I noticed a new service popped up called MTN data share. *141*5# option 1 then option 3.

It allows you to share your data bundle with other simcards. SO you can have 1 main data account then share it with other numbers. Pretty cool service.

I tested it on 2 prepaid simcards and it works and it's free.

SO MTN data share if free for contract users too. Just log into mycontract.mtn.co.za and add the service.

Dial *141*5# option 1 then option 2 to link numbers. You can share data bundles between prepaid and contract users and inclusive data bundles with data contracts or the extra data you get with your voice contract can also be shared.

So how does this work?

I enabled it on my contract account, and added a prepaid number to it. How does the prepaid use the contract data, or do you need to buy a special "Data share" bundle?

You do not need to do anything. That prepaid number that you linked is now able to use your data bundles from your contract. Once the data bundles have been depleted the prepaid number will no longer have access to the internet unless you delink the number and you load airtime on the prepaid sim

IF you check your contract sim data via *141*1# you should see (shared). That means the data share is active and all your linked numbers will share that data.

Is this limited to the Internet APN or will work with afrihost/axxess one? If so this will be awesome!!

Yeah only MTN bundles of any size. MTN can only see what bundles you have loaded with MTN.

Honestly, I can't be the only one who is actually impressed by this? If it works the way I understand it I mean.

This is the same as Vodacom Multi-data SIM for a small change in that it is available across ALL types of SIM services. Vodacom Multi-data SIM is only available on "Open Ended" contracts. Jannie van Zyl has been talking for years of change in their VC systems to allow Multi-data SIM service accross ALL types of services. Looks like MTN jumped the ahead in the race. Look out for VC in Feb they will follow and make theirs look different.

Nice, not bad attempt at all,can be pretty handy for families, basically you just take out a mobile data contract and let your cellphones use the bundle from there. In fact its even pretty convenient for individual if it works that way,I wish the other networks could implement something like this also.

Well done MTN,Well done MTN indeed, you are changing slowly,I'm still not sure I'll ever trust you again especially in the absence of competition but this is definitely a big step in the right direction.

Also not surprised to see cavedog announce it since you are after all affiliated with them.:D

I really support the underlying concept and it also allows for a level of bulk purchasing. At a practical level I'm worried about being able to manage the use of my data bundle when one or more others are also depleting.

I have 3 MTN accounts - my own phone number, my SO's, and my data sim.
The only account in MTN Active that allows me to add the service is for my own phone number?
What a ball ache

And after a 20 minute phone call with MTN customer care, neither the consultant nor the "data support team" have any knowledge of the service and can't help me activate it.

Activate it yourself in the online portal or using the USSD codes. It is instant.

Not available on the Active portal, as I stated in the post before the one you quoted, and USSD gives a message saying "To set up data share please contact your service provider".

It's there, it's called DSHARE or something. It isn't an obvious name. I enabled mine there after I first read the post here.
Just search for SHARE under the available services and you'll find it.

The name of the service is so obvious... not. Like seriously.. MTN need to clean up this service list and put friendly names or descriptions. I'd have never guessed it was that one lol.

Ps. now i just need a better data offering and I will use this service for more than just letting my iPad use my phone data.

If i have a data contract for my ipad can i share that data to a normal cellphone mtn sim card?
