PCMCIA vs Express Card slot on laptop

My new DELL Precision M90 laptop does not have a PCMCIA slot ....:(

It has the newer generation Express Card slot and can only take Express/34 and/or Express/54 cards.

Does anyone know .... :

(1) When MTN F@stLink HSDPA data cards will be available in the Express Card format?

(1) Or should I go for a PCMCIA - USB adaptor, and if so, where can I source this in Randburg, Gauteng area? I have heard of UNsuccess stories about this adaptor's compatibility with the F@stLink E620 Data Card

TIA ...

Looks like this is the only solution at the moment

Then can you advise on when MTN intends to supply F@stLink Data Cards compatible with the newer ExpressCard slots (as opposed to old technology PCMCIA)?

I am concerned about the PCMCIA to USB adaptor as I have heard of incompatiblity issues

Great .... thanks - But I hope providers get a move on with this, as the PCMCIA slot is rapidly becoming an historic relic ;) ... and I will go with whichever provider brings out a USB and/or ExpressCard slot connectivity first.

And is the E220 USB card 4G ready? I.e. capable of 3.6mbps?

Hi

I am trying to connect a Ericsson T39m and I am getting "wrong APN" message on the phone.

How do I set it on my modem settings and or on the phone.

Thanks
Sean

Hey Sean

I'll forward this to my Device manager and will advise ASAP

Thanks

I await your reply.

I can connect to MTNLoaded via the phone but not as a modem.

Sean

Have you tried the additional string - AT+CGDCONT=,,"myMTN"<cr>

You go to control panel, then go to phone and modems go to advanced and try the above string or the following string at+cgdcont=1,"ip","mtninternet","",0,0

Let me know otherwise we'll have to wait for my Device manager to advise

Thanks MTNDD

I have tried the at+cgdcont=1,"ip","mymtn","",0,0 and with "internet", but not with "mtninternet".

I will try this string also AT+CGDCONT=,,"myMTN"<cr>

Are these strings case sensitive???

Technical Coverage

Hi MTN_Data_Dude,
I notice that MTN has updated their coverage maps. For my area MTN changed their coverage from 3G to HSDPA .
I can see the MTN tower from my roof (800m) and get great 3G speeds while sitting on my roof. On my patio (outside) I drop to 140kbps and inside the house down to GPRS speeds.
Has MTN tried to overstate their coverage to catch-up to Vodacom ?
I have been waiting for a solution since I registered a complaint 3 months ago.

I've just checked and the maps in my area do seem slightly different to the ones I saved in June 2006.

I noticed the big red 3G bow tie over Century City in Cape Town has now shrunk to two tiny dots of blue HSDPA.
The coverage selection is definitely set to 'Show HSDPA +3G'.

Seems you might need an antena to boost your signal.
