Mtn Data

Two questions:
1) When will 3G be roled out in Irene / Dorinkloof areas (Centurion) ?
2) What can one do about bad signal strength in the Irene north area? My cellphone reckons it is connected to a dorinkloof tower which must be far away as I usually get 1 bar on my cellphone and datacard

Thanks

It is possible if your logging onto (MTC Namibia), as we do have a GPRS roaming agreement with (MTC Namibia).

Settings and dial string stay exactly the same as if you are in SA.

Thanks MTN DD
thanks for the quick reply!

Are you 100% sure?

To start with, I cannot see how they would know to route the radius request to our server in SA for authentication. If they can, this could be considered a security breach as MTC has access to our APN.

This is for a corporate APN and not the internet APN.

With regards to 3G the answer is the same… as above

With regards to the coverage query, can you please call the helpline on 0839001212 so that the coverage department can log a query to investigate.

Thanks allot

Problems with MTN 3G

Clive,

I sent you a private message yesterday for another query..

but here's a public one for you:

I'm only getting topspeeds of 700kbps in Sunninghill @ night... on the HSDPA card.. I've got full full reception.. and I only get 300kbps during the day.. I know it's limited to the amount of users.. but surely... if I'm connecting at 1.8mbps... I should sometime cross into 1mbps?

And next question..
When will we start seeing true speeds of 1.5 and above?

thanks.

Well let me start,

With the top speeds of 700kbps in Sunninghill @ night on the HSDPA card, I see you say you have full reception,

In term's of the speed you get will depend on your hardware e.g. the terminal you connecting to, how far you are from the tower and how many user's per ratio on the specific tower you're connecting to at the time with the physical capability of the specific tower at the point in time when connecting, as well as the amount of user's using the tower at that point's in time you've mentioned your signal strength is full, but please be aware of the above because all these will have an impact on your speed........

Potentially at the end of this year we'll see speed's of 1, 5 and above

Any other questions please let me know

Thanks allot

Myvital

To get the precise baude rate, you can download Myvital agent from Google, it’s free, and the software gives you the precise connection speed.

Hope this helps

Here's a link to MyVitalAgent and MyVitalAgentIP

Thanks MTN DD

One glitch I came across when using VitalAgent, when it asked me to reboot my pc as soon as I logged back on and dialed my existing dial up it disabled my Bluetooth modem and would only show my data card modem and normal internal modem, and what ever I tried in terms of getting VitalAgent to recognize that I have a internal Bluetooth modem it wouldn't work -Actually had to remove it, reboot and then my Bluetooth modem worked like a bomb again.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Let me know

Thanks MTN DD

No Signal, Not even one bar.

Hey Dude

Sorry to bother you but could you ask your coverage department what's happening with regards to a signal on the road between Napier and Stanford in the Western Cape? It has perfect Vodacom signal, but MTN is dead for most of this road (about 20 minutes).

Thanks hey

Warren

Well, I've only been using 3G/HSDPA for a week now, but I'm very impressed. I get peak speeds of around 800kbps in Centurion CBD, Faerie Glen and Garsfontein. Average (browsing) speeds vary between 150-400kbps, depending on site / time of day. A telkom speed test typical returns a DL speed of 400-700kbps (once again, time of day dependent).
Edit: I seldom have more than 3 bars. Sometimes only 1, but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

Obviously 1Mbps+ would be nice, but realistically there are so many factors involved (your connection to the tower, load on the tower & tower BW, and the internet). All in all I'm quite happy.

If my test in Silver Lakes is successful, then my parents will join the MTN 3G bandwagon. (Coverage map indicates 3G, but I know MTN's map is a little optimistic, while Vodacom (no 3G in Silver Lakes) tends to be more pessimistic.)

MTN DD, in case you had any doubts, we really value your presence on the forum, and hope that you become a "permanent fixture" ;-)

Good day,

I'm glad to hear that you're happy overall and I'm also happy to hear that my presence is being valued on this forum, as that's what I'm here for is to try and help as much as possible.

P.S. I'm sure it will become a permanent fixture............

Let me add just one more thing it also depend's on the number of E1's. Transmission from the tower to the MTN switches. These are limited and expensive resources and Telkom cannot deliver on current backlog of orders.

Thanks MTN DD

Big time, little 'ol me has been waiting for 3 sites to be upgraded now, one for six months, one for 9 months, and the other for a month or so.

Telkom just plain has no capacity, an example, they don't even have space for an additional 512kb/s on a single line in Rivonia, heavens knows what you guys at the operators must be doing asking for E1's all over the show!
