Mtn Edge Map

MTNBroadband - am I correct is saying that not all phones can transmit data and have you making a call at the same time? Maybe all? (I am using a 6230)

If I'm actively transmitting data via GPRS, then people calling me get "The caller currently unavailable" or something similar. It then makes sharing the phone for data and voice pointless.

Maybe better to have a vodacom 3G card to keep your MTN line open for calls ;)

Why is it that I can't mtnsp/callquest via MTN GPRS?

correct - your phone will divert when you are "actively" connected to GPRS. if your connection is idling and someone phones, your phone will suspend the GPRS connection and let the voice call come through. In theory, it will resume the GPRS connection on completion of the voice call, although in my experience this doesnt always work.
The same applies with UMTS networks by the way...
Ciao -

It somehow seems pointless to use your business line for GPRS then as you loose the ability for people to call while online.

yeah, it does. I keep a seperate phone for business anyway. suppose thats where data cards come in...

MTNBB, can u tell me when reservoir hills/SPRINGFIELD and surrounding areas in durban will get edge and 3G coverage

i havent had a response from MTNBB, please can u tell me or publish a map/proposed areas.

MTNBB

I think I sent a private about this, anyhow...

Would it not be a getter idea to have a letter in front of the cell name indicating base capability, so Rather than intermittent Yello Broadband, have something like E-Rivonia for Edge, G-Bryanston for GPRS and 3G-Rivonia for full 3G... I take it that not all base station will be 3G capable leading to future confusion about connection speed etc...

All our cells are GPRS capable. The 3G network is a separate network so the only way you would tell if you had 3G from the broadcast is by actually picking up a 3G tower. That only leaves EDGE and we need something which is less intrusive the for users who just want their good old suburb broadcast.

For info - i finally got a copy of the EDGE map today from MTN. With MTNBB's permission (and somebody here that is willing to host it), we can put it up!

edit : OK - one of the forumites has kindly offered to host it. All we need now is permission from MTNBB...

I welcome the information itself going out.

The reason for the delay in putting this on our own site is getting the branding and look-and-feel sorted out and ensuring the relevant disclaimers because this is a radio planner's computer generated map and is also based on availability of back-links. Also our website has the correct copyright etc on the pages.

If you can share this information without compromising our branding and legal responsibilities then we have a winner.

I would rather not interfere then if you guys are going to post it. I cant guarantee that I wont compromise your branding :D

waiting for the EDGE/3G map

HI MTNBB

I think many of us are waiting for the hi res mtn edge/3G map. Any news on its arrival date?

We are still planning for the 3G launch in June and many of the details will be available then.

The Cape Town CBD has EDGE and I'll need to check how far along the coast this extends. If you live there then check for the Y'ello Broadband cell broadcast.

Check out the handsets in the Handset thread as our handset expert provides this information - we sell the Nokia 6230 and Nokia 6630 and they both support EDGE.

I know this is a bit of an inane question but how is the rollout on the West Coast seaboard of Cape Town going? At this stage, out of the 7 or 8 towers (channels) I get coverage from, only two seem to be EDGE enabled (channel 90 and 103). Unfortunately the strongest signal I get is from channel 111 so I almost never get an EDGE connection unless I force it to use 103...

Man Netmon is a lekka tool, once ScrnScrm showed us how to use it.....

Hi all

I am still working on the map but here is the coverage list status.

END MAY (Some of it already completed)
(CBD's and slightly extended beyond)
Greater Johannesburg area
Durban
Bloemfontein
Port Elizabeth (80%)
Cape Town (80%), Mitchell's Plain, Khayelitsha
Stellenbosch
Grahamstown

END JUNE
East London, George, Jeffrey's Bay, Kimberley, Klerksdorp, Knysna, Mosselbay, Richards Bay, Empangeni, Nelspruit, Plettenberg Bay, Polokwane, Rustenburg, Mafikeng, Uitenhage, Umtata

HI
DOES KRUGERSDORP and Azaadville have full EDGE coverage?

Can we use SKYPE ( VOIP ) over EDGE or is that against MTN s conditions?

Thanks

I'm afraid Krugersdorp and Azaadville are out of coverage. There are a few random sites so if you get Y'ello Broadband on your cell broadcast on the handset you know you have ege in that site.

VoIP is tariffed at higher rates

Mams, if you give me more info i.e. cell ID or Base Station name, I will look into it for you. Also, if you can give me the neighbour cell info as well, I can tell you which of them have Edge...
There is one cell in Krugersdorp that definately has Edge - the NG Kerk Krugersdorp East. The cell has 4 time slots enabled.

Cape Town coverage

Hi

What chances of EDGE or 3G in Hout Bay or Kommetjie in CT. My understanding was that the two tier strategy would lead to wider coverage overall, but to date can only get normal GPRS in these areas, having patiently waited for an EDGE/3G phone.

Thanks for any respose

They have surveyed that area but I'm afraid no decision yet. Will advise when this is approved

Middle of june.........no 3G launch........no Map.........come on MTN
