Mtn Edge Map

Hi MTNbb ... I know you are prob madly busy today && we hope the launch went well yesterday. When you get a sec - prob being dumb but I can't find any kind of coverage map yet on MTN.co.za

Is that still in the pipeline?

1. End June for East London (EDGE) - are we nearly there yet?
2. When will MTN consider a flat rate service (not based on cap), or a larger cap?
I worry about using EDGE 24/7 at home on my PC, what with potential email worms, etc I can see my monthly account hitting 10gb+ if my pc gets infected...

Hi Ed,

Just fyi - I am running on GPRS at home with access on all the time and my average usage is in the region of 200MB a month. I don't download and I "power surf" @ work but that gives an idea. Also your apps like DU Meter can be set to terminate all connections above a certain limit.

I was worried about the cap at first as well but it is actually a heck of a lot of data :)

Just checked my work stats - where I DO power surf for research and do a lot of genuine work related downloading (obviously if you want to dl "The Bourne Supremacy" then you want to move to London :) )

Last month I used 450MB.

For a single user surfing 1 GB should be enough for peace of mind

MTNbb ... how soon can I expect at least a CS3/4 upgrade on the towers in KZN Midlands ... any ideas?

thanks!

Much appreciated, hopefully East London, SA is where I'll be this time next year... maybe R16 for bourne supremacy at the vid hire is an ok deal for now :-)

Hey MTNBB

any news on edge in East London yet? Ps kudos on the open forum - congrats to mtn on their involvement and transparency here.

The reason I ask about the CS3/4 is Vodacom are rolling it out quite soon in my Area ... obviously I hope MTN will bring out EDGE and then the argument is settled ...

MTN Coverage MAP

I have noticed, that a 3G/EDGE/GPRS coverage map is available on MTN's web site.

It is in the form of a downloadable PDF file.

The map is of the whole RSA and does not give enough detail of Gauteng.

MTNBB, will MTN provide us with a higher resolution map in the near future?

I am specifically interested on the 3G coverage in the Pretoria-East area.

Isn't it interesting that the land of the "early adopters" i.e. Cape Town has a smaller coverage area than PE? Not that I'm ever at home anyway being stuck in a hotel in Joburg :(

Mams, if you give me more info i.e. cell ID or Base Station name, I will look into it for you. Also, if you can give me the neighbour cell info as well, I can tell you which of them have Edge...
There is one cell in Krugersdorp that definately has Edge - the NG Kerk Krugersdorp East. The cell has 4 time slots enabled.

Hi. Could you help me too? I need to know which of the following towers have EDGE: Prieska, Stofbakkies, Oranje Besproeiing. Also, how do one force a cellphone to use a specific tower (Nokia 6310 and 6230i).

Thanks

you have the cell ids for me?

Sorry, I'm new with this. What is meant by the cell ids and/or base station names. I only know the names as it's shown on my cellphone, which is "Prieska", "Stofbakkies" and "Oranje Besproeiing" respectively. It's in the Nortern Cape, near a town called Prieska.

3G @ Sun City

Hi MTNBB,

Please could you tell me if Sun City has 3G coverage?

Microsoft is having their TechEd Conference there at the end of Oct 2005 and there will be aprox. 1500 delegates, many of which would love the opportunity to have 3G data connectitive.

Thanks

I dunno if I am missing something, but it would be nice if one can zoom in on the map to see specific towers. I am trying to see Stellenbosch but the map's resolution is just not good enough.

I have a copy of the map I downloaded in pdf a while ago. Today when I went back to check whether they've updated the page, I see they have!

Now, not only do you get a fairly useless coverage map to strain your eyes at, but you can't even download the (slightly less useless) pdf version of it anymore. Or am I blind?

If anyone knows of an updated map, please tell! Or at least give us a heads-up on what areas MTN is planning to cover next.

Anyone have any idea how to get info on a particular tower's planned upgrades?

My cellid is 32031 and only has gprs. I like to know when to expect at least gprs+ or preferably EDGE.

At the moment even Vodacom is giving me 8.7KB/s downloads ... so it's clear they have upgraded their towers around here (KZN Midlands).

Here's hoping MTN plans to remain the BETTER connection!

thanks guys (and girsl?)
