I was wondering if anyone has been successful in getting eSIM activated on their phones? Is it only on contract? If so would a SIM only contract work?

They recently launched it for phones not just wearables so would be interesting to hear if the store staff have been trained to know what eSIM is.
Wondering if i can activate it on my iPhone 12.

Lol, I contacted them today to try and find this out, to be told that no-one actually knows and that I "...need to visit a MTN store to find out..."

So what's the point of an eSIM if you have to visit the store?

MTN fail.

Was a joke today even. Menlyn tells me that apparently if you didnt buy the Apple Watch or iPhone from them then they cant activate eSIM

Woodlands claims that they have haven’t gotten training yet and only Menlyn does it.

135 obviously tells you to visit the store

I would like to import an eSIM phone and use an MTN profile, but it seems that they don't want my business.

Need a contract, cheap sim only ones work.

Then you need a lot of patience and people skills because then you need to get a store consultant to realise that you can actually go into the Sim swop menu and you can actually select eSIM as the simcard you are swopping to and no the world wont implode when you do that...

Be prepared to lose access to your number as soon as the process starts for up to 24hrs.

Ensure you get emails such as your order number in store and wait for the Sim swop successful email. If you dont get a QR code after that email phone 135 and ask them to email the sim details and QR code again.

Thanks for the procedure.
Ain't nobody got no time for that. MNOs have literally had years to train their staff and streamline processes. It's as if they would prefer the consumer to use the old tech and make it as difficult as possible to migrate to the new.

Thank you again for the procedure. It works but the activation is an important part without that authentication the esim qr code emails will never come.

I’ve managed to get it resolved after battling since before Christmas with the MTN store next to the Checkers in the main court.

Happy to have my dual sim iphone up and running. Adds years to my iPhone XS - no need to upgrade for nothing and no-one.

Menlyn shopping centre?

So MTN only does this if you have a contract with them... but after going to a few stores to request this esim I cannot help but think it will still be a schlepp to get an esim as not a lot of staff knew what I was talking about in the first place.

Good thing this watch has space for an actual sim as well, will have to do until the day they realise that prepaid customers R29pm is the same as contract customers R29pm... oh well.

I’m on corporate consumer account; so my guy advised me I have to wait a month or so until it’s released for these accounts
It’s now active for standard consumer accounts
Not sure about training though I think a lot of the stores are Franchise owned and not Head office ? So training is delayed

Anyone know if its possible to get the QR code online?

Eg if you're an exciting client and just wish to switch to esim.

I visited a branch today and did a sim swap to eSIM.

I received an email saying the sim swap was successful, but I never got the email with the QR code.

I contacted support, who gave me a copy-pasted response with instructions on how to pair a watch to my phone. :-/

I phoned 135 a couple of times. Got to the right consultant and emailed the QR code before getting off the phone call.

Was a extremely frustrating experience in December 2020 to get the eSim activated. Good luck.

Yeah, email support was completely clueless.

I phoned support and luckily the first person I spoke to was able to send me the email immediately!

Now living that sweet dual eSIM data life.

Seems esim still isn't supported on MTN

Had to cancel a contract today because it doesn't work with Apple Watch

I've been waiting for them to activate my eSim since Tuesday, useless bunch.
