Hoping someone could shed some light on the issues I'm having.

I live in Welgemoed Cape Town and we have had fibre installed for about a year or so by MTN and have yet still to move over.

The issue I'm having is that MTN are very over priced and their offerings are very limited. When I do an availability test on MTN is says fibre is available, great but I refuse to go with MTN because of their pricing.

I'm contacting many other ISPs but all their availability tests say I cannot get Fibre in my area. Is my thinking correct that I have to go through MTN for my fibre? If so we've gone back 10 years in terms of competitiveness.

Please say I am wrong and there is something I'm missing, as far as I know MTN did agree to the idea of open networks.

Hey man,

I have MTN fibre and yes unfortunately the MTN network is a closed network. There was some news a few years back about MTN moving to an open network, but this hasn't happened yet and I can't seem to find out any information on the subject either. It seems like FireStream was offering their uncapped packages on the MTN a while ago, but now they refuse to answer questions about their advertised MTN packages on their website. I have tried calling, emailing etc to no avail. I opted for the 20mbps line, and I haven't had any issues at all since I got it installed, the data is on the expensive side yes, but I was sitting with a terrible 2 mbps adsl line that barely worked, so I almost didn't have a choice in the matter. I'm just hoping that in the future MTN will offer decent uncapped packages like practically every other provider offers. But for now, there isn't any good news.

Thanks for the reply,

It's very frustrating yes. I feel it's very intentional from MTNs side. It's the whole mobile operators mentality all over again playing itself out in a Fibre setting.
They're pushing hard with door to door campaigns trying to get me to sign up. I have a feeling they are going to be opening up the network but only after a certain period allowing them to build up their subscriber base.

As you said other ISPs are very unhelpful as well. I request Fibre availability get an email, tell them where I am and they respond no can't help. I respond to this and asking for any sort of info and no email response after that. It's happened about 5 times now.
