MTN hands out massive share options to executives

That’s awesome. When share price recovers. That will be worth a rather big packet!

If the share price recovers.
The price went from about R139 to about R89 in a year.
How can these be performance bonuses.

I assume an executive - after markets are blatantly illustrating a fairly poor perception of what MTN executives achieved - must have an experience of meeting with Father Christmas rather than “payment” for achievement resulting from input, achievement and hard work? If I were them I would consider handing back what surely belong to the battered shareholders.

Usual way it’s done in US and SA.

As much as people say it sucks, in a time when most execs are leaving the country this may be part of a way of retaining talent for a period rather than just straight performance.

Yes it sucks for the avg joe soap but if he studies and mba, connects with the right folk and then he too can be an exec. <— a broken system but that’s how it works

Nice strike price, pretty sure we can go up from here.

They vest in 3 years - would you be willing to sacrifice most hours in the next 3 years of your life (since that's exactly what execs do) to do nothing but MTN? Besides the amount these execs have worked in the past to get to this point - little to nothing stopping those ambitious enough to chase the money rather than more interesting pursuits...

Dear executive respondent - thanks for responding, however maybe you should use those many invested hours (according to your response) over the past three years in a more productively planned strategy? The picture on the table is - you’ve halved the share price in these three years. If I do the same, I will surely be fired? Maybe your training isn’t giving the benefits to shareholders and workers alike. They’ve invested in a company that just doesn’t come to the party. There is always some reason at hand as to why the shares are not performing. Actually highly shameful?

As per usual, the execs only score, the workers at the coal face get fukkkalll
Of course. That's the way it works, and it should be that way. To those at the coal face, it's their moral obligation and duty to strive for something better, if it's beyond them, or if they're too lazy to, then they just have to accept their lot in life and get on with things. Hard work and determination ALWAYS pays off.

Problem with in SA is we are almost as if believing the world is flat - once serious religion. Are SA execs really so good as is the message so elegantly sold by them. If they are really good, why is the stock exchange not illustrating it? Blame it on politicians? Why are US bourses doing it? Maybe all the cream is taken by non-performing so-called execs. Arn’t these so-called execs only chirping along (&appointed only for that reason?) with CE 0’s. Take the Steinhoff saga. A nice illustrations is whatching a CE 0’s using of company/share holder money? to dine & wine at country clubs towards the end of the year. The highly perked execs are following in a suite almost like a bunch of dogs BEHIND the CE0. These execs are highly perked -should they want shares let them buy it like others - except politicians?? Where is the pride in committing an excellent job? Why do hard working people in SA take this unsubstantiated claims. A few excellent news reporters often indicate this, but the wide dessert absorbs their warnings.

In brief: 1. SA execs always claim they are excellent, but why doesn’t the growth of JSE reflects this? They always blame politicians as the reason. 2. A CEO is seemingly determine execs’ thinking patterns, almost as it seemingly happened at Steinhoff - was there really independent thinking or did the CEO determine how they think?3. Companies entertain highly perked execs on company cost/ shareholders money. Why? If they want to wine and dine, let them pay for themself. 4. Why should execs get shares? They are already highly perked. If they belief in what they are doing, let them buy their own shares of the company where they are employed. All others in society are buying independently shares. Why can’t they also do this?

Vested shares are a retention strategy that is practiced by virtually all companies with shares to offer. While this article lists around 10 execs, in practice there are probably hundreds of MTN employees being offered some amount of shares as part of the incentive/retention plan. Just the way it works guys.

Dear Markd, at first I did not want respond on your comments, however it precisely illustrates my experience. Why is this the accepted stance? The question is: Did they earn it? Look at the share price and your investment growth - add inflation and then realistically admit - this management team is making you poorer and poorer. The only company that gave me a decent return last year is the one that does not support this ripping off of investors by giving golden hand shakes filled with shares. Wouldn’t a street vendor did better, because these so-called well-trained execs just don’t do it. The world is NOT flat?

Is this the new drunk thread. I dont understand half the posts.

/ checks drink

Dear SuaRoza, thanks for you comment. Usually I am fairly unwilling to mark “are you a robot”. Proof your stance by answering my straight forward question (and hopefully you are part of this exec group?): Did my stock prices increase in value because of what they did?
