Just went down to the MTN store below my work, MTN Chiappini Square in Cape Town and asked them about the iPhone, when they getting it etc.

The guy said that they will not be getting the phone because MTN has decided not to do the phone.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can see the business reason behind it, but i think it was more about MTN not being offered the phone.

Importing an iPhone by yourself saves you alot of money ;)

I was under the impression that Vodacom/Vodafone had exclusive rights to the iphone in SA (distributors) for what... first month or so and then it's fair game.

Let me put it to you this way,

Will you buy the iPhone locally for R 8k or import for a total price of just under or close to R 5k ?

That is a R 3k difference ;)

With the proliferation of iPhone threads on here I thought it had become apparent that the iPhone had been brought in exclusively by Vodacom...

Not everyone has the know how and facilities to import a phone...

Don’t you mean exclusively by Vodacom?.....It has been apparent to me for months now that Mtn won't have the iPone.

However, if you buy the vodacom iPhone - you can very easily use it on MTN. It works 100%

In the end it's a rather massively inflated price :(

Not really, all the cheap iPhones being sold are locked, I have a locked iPhone and it requires a lot of time to unlock it(and other hassles), the cheapest unlocked iphone available now is from Hong Kong but if you import it the shipping will make it cost the same as Vodacom's unlocked iPhone.

If someone imports in bulk then it could be cheaper though.

I beg to differ, do you have any links ?

This is the cheapest, brandnew legally unlocked iPhone 3G available yet...

Any iPhone 3G cheaper than this would either be secondhand or hacked with a phony unlock and if you update your firmware this could break the fake unlock.

Edit:
If you were reading the article about getting the iphone3g cheaper posted earlier it is mostly uninformed as with most iPhone articles posted here.

Buy a at&t phone and unlock it yourself. The phones are crap cheap and the hack is not rocket science ;) I bet a 14yo can do it

I have unlocked(unofficially) my AT&T phone, it was cheap when I imported it (R5000) but like I said it's annoying because Apple tries to close holes and sometimes you are forced to wait for the devteam to release an update for new firmware.

You can't officially unlock an AT&T iPhone and there are only hardware unlocks for the 3G version which can be tricky.
