MTN is just like SASOL.
SOSAL makes oil for $36 per barrel then sells its petrol for the same price as all the other petrol companies in SA that buy oil for $110 per barrel.
Now MTN has its own network and doesn't buy airtime from other companies, but sells the airtime for the same price as that of a company who buys their airtime from another network.
It makes you wonder.....

What sucking the living life out of everybody?

You actually sound like one of those corporate bosses who needs a fat KLAP!

I am sure your bank account is way too full.

So it wont matter how much you pay for anything anyway.

I'm always wondering why there isn't a break down of what exactly R1.95 per minute (for example) buys during a voice call, like there is with petrol.

A consultant once told us during a presentation that a brand new VodaCom tower with servers and everything (about R7.5m), pays for itself in something like 4 minutes of going hot in a place like Gauteng. Imagine that and then think of all the things VC sponsors & yet they still rake in massive profits every year!

I agree total with you there.
We should have a proper break down for what we actually pay for.

You sound like they're holding you hostage. You don't like 'em, get a new cellco. Sommer take your number with you

Oh Super grandmaster please behave... lol

Telecommunications in SA is far worse than SASOL, as I understand it the government sets the petrol price by some horribly complicated formula. This is why ALL companies charge exactly the same, unlike the US where prices are different at individual stations, even those owned by the same company.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the pricing of communications/wireless services are regulated.

And here is my small voice for greater transparency in tariffs

By the way it goes for all the companies in SA not just MTN duh...

Plus do you think we as consumers should rather then just shut up or what? Just pay , pay , pay and pay.

oh grow up. MTN owns and develops their own network, as does Vodacom. They in turn charge what the market will bear in terms of pricing. It's called capitalism. If you don't like it, you can try to find an alternative.

This NOTHING like SASOL and Mittel Steel, who charge the international market price for their products. SASOL is in fact regulated by government ito pricing.

All Grandmasters should go and sit by the river and smoke some pipe....
I in the meantime, I am building the bridge for them to walk over the river!!!
HAHa
You do work for some corporate company!!!! Its must be MTN !!! HAHA

You dont honestly believe that do you? They do pay themselves off but not that quick.

So does that make you feel happy???

That would require the tower to serve around 1 million subscribers at a time.... (1M * R1.95 * 4 ~= R8 M)

I agree with Uli. The worst part of it - and this is mostly common to all SA companies - one pays too much and gets terrible service in return.

One generally gets the idea companies have this attitude "you better pay up buddy and we'll see what we can provide. It should be OK, but if its not..pay some more...maybe we can improve..oh wait its time to pay again"

One GSM Tower $$$ in SA

Actually Heres the mathematics to It : Get your Calculators OuT

GSM 900 - 8 Voice Channels
Time division multiplexing is used to allow eight full-rate or sixteen half-rate speech channels per radio frequency channel.

GSM 1800 - 16 Voice Channels

Time division multiplexing is used to allow 16 full-rate or 32 half-rate speech channels per radio frequency channel.

Vodacom Gsm - 900 Tower
16 Voice Channels
60 Minutes per Hour
12 Hours Peak Output
3 Hours off Peak Output

16 x 60 x 12 x R3 = R34 560-00
16 x 60 x 3 x R1 = R2800

R34 560-00 + R2800-00 = R37 360 per Day Per Tower

R37 360 x 30 Days in the month = Income R1 120 800-00 per Month per Tower

It Costs R1 500 000-00 Once off Setup Costs for a Brand new GSM 900 Tower.
( Mast - Antennae - Ducting - Radios - Power Setup - GSM patents - Software - Aircon - Floor Slab - Fencing - Cabinet )

Fixed Monthly Costs per Tower :

Site Rental = R5000 per Month
E1 Telkom Line = R4000 per month
Electricity For The Tower = R15000 per month

You Do the Math and workout what MTN & Vodacom are doing to the South Africans ! Cell-C excluded because of their Small Low paying Customers.

DXL - Mobile

Yup, do the math. 'Cos you don't need switching equipment, billing systems, international connectivity, staff, buildings, vehicles, office equipment, marketing, retail stores, licenses, environmental assessment, legal fees etc. I would expect that MTN's salary bill alone runs into the billions.

MTN is a listed company... if you want to see how they're ripping you off all you need to do is look at their Annual Report. (I'll help you out.. you can find it here: http://www.mtn.com/InvestorRelation...current_annual_results.php&ttl=Annual Results ) There is no point in trying to isolate one part of their business to show how profitable they are while ignoring the other costs to do business.

+1

Same thing with the $36 per barrel. (I heard its $26 / $15 btw...but the estimates are all over the show).
