So I'm getting very frustrated with MTN about allowing LTE for prepaid customers.

So some one I know had a prepaid sim and converted it to a contract sim and the mtn store did not have a nano sim for his iphone 5. I told him I can help him cut his old prepaid sim and put it in the device. Worked fine but its like a very old simcard..... Anyways I told him to phone for LTE to be activated. He is now using LTE with that OLD simcard......

This proves that if your sim is atleast 64k LTE will work......

Look at the response I got from MTN when I complained on facebook and hellopeter....

So my question still stands..... Why rollout LTE so aggressively but don't allow prepaid customers to use it????

"Hello cavedog8,

Thank you for posting.

Please accept our apologies for the delayed response.

Kindly be advised that we do not have LTE sim card on prepaid at present and communication will be sent as soon as it becomes available. Please note however that even though the handset is LTE compatible if the sim card is not you will not connect to the LTE network but you will connect to a 3G network.

Regards,
Nomonde.

EDIT: LTE Launched on prepaid on 12th August 2014. You need a 128k simcard and need to phone 173 for them to activate it.

Yeah I know its so frustrating.... Looks like they are intentionally blocking prepaid users from accessing the LTE network. 64k sim cards are capable of LTE as proven by vodacom. All their 64k sims work with LTE.

And now eight months later LTE 128k MTN sim cards are still not available to prepaid customers.

I visited three MTN shops in the last two weeks and got the same answer every time, LTE is not available to prepaid customers.

MTN can take their contracts and shove it where the sun don't shine!

Yes and I ask MTN why only allow 128k sims for LTE when 64k can work with LTE.

Maybe 64k cards can work, but do not support full functionality, I don't know. Point is that if it is a case, they should supply prepaid 128k SIM's.

What happens if contract is finished and converted to prepaid? Do you lose LTE access?

I did try that method and it work only to find out that MTN has disabled LTE on my sim. WHen I phoned to activate it again they said its greyed out. MTN found out people where activating LTE on prepaid disabled the LTE option completely for prepaid users.

So now if you migrate to prepaid from contract you instantly loose access to afrihost apn and LTE

OMG we need a LTE simcard.... Looks like it will be impossible to find because its just been launched today.... Wonder what they will rip me for a new one..... SIGH why did they not just enable the 64k simcards for LTE. Now they have to process so many sim swaps for people that wants to use LTE.....

So I had a old unused number with a 128k simcard that was a top up contract and the migrated to prepaid. Phoned 173 and they activated LTE for me and its up and running now no problems.... :)

its a smart move.... as they will now rip you a new one.. (with the data you will consume)

The data will flow like "wahttaa"

I must say the pings are sweeeet on LTE, it is as close as you'll ever get to ADSL. (no other wireless tech can compare). It's stable as a rock too. Just don't move the router/LTE modem very far from the window

Its IMPOSSIBLE to get a Prepaid LTE sim from MTN. Good luck finding one. The store manager is saying that they placed a order for simcards when it was launched and are still waiting for them to come. She said it might still be like 2 weeks before they get them.... SIGH
