Maybe you are not aware, MTN has area specific offers denoted "MyTown". There was an article about that on mybb in 2020.
Now it seems, at least for me, this menu has been somewhat hidden. According to the article you can dial *142# and select My Town.
So dialling *142#:
Then select 6. My Town:
These are all voice offers that don't tickle my fancy. And for a while now I thought I was just in an "unlucky" area getting only voice offers and no data offers.
But I stumbled across a different menu by accident which is displayed as MyTownOffers. I must have seen it a couple of times before, but didn't go into it thinking it is only more voice offers. But they are actually quite decent data offers, at least for me.
What I did, and I had to screw around with the menus quite a lot to get repeatable results (I was in a queue at Home Affairs, plenty of time...):
Dial *141#:
Then select 2. Data:
Then select 99. Back
Notice the menus are now different.
Select 8. MyTownOffers. Now I get only data bundles, and pretty decent ones too.
And 0. More has more data offers and 1 voice offer:
The article also states you can dial *136*2#. This works for me too, and again there are differences in the menu compared to the previous one above where 8.MyTownOffers was available:
But it is still quite hidden, because I cannot get to 8.MyTownOffers if I "split" the USSD sequence as follows:
First only dial *136# -> the same menu as *141# pops up.
Select 2.Data -> no MyTown offers
Select 99. Back -> still no MyTown offers.
In addition, if I combine the full sequence, *136*2*8# I get again the same menu as just dialling *141# and no MyTownOffers
It is uncommon for a user, at least a new MTN user, to dial USSD commands in combination.
Please reply if you can access this menu and share your data offers.
To summarise, the best direct way is to dial *136*2# and then select 8.MyTownOffers
