MTN network problems (14 December 2011)

I've got no data service on my Galaxy S2 in Woodmead...
 
I've been driving in & around Randburg & Roodepoort areas. When people from MTN call me it says "Private no." even wen I have the person's number on my cell & mine displayed like that to 3 other people.
 
Yup I can vouch for Cape Town. My personal phone could not connect to MTN for some time over the last weekend and this morning the work cell had the same issue...
 
I am in Roodepoort (West Rand).

I was disconnected from the network while gaming at about 16H50 yesterday. One can't forget that - such a crushing feeling (I lost a very important game by DNF - DID NOT FINISH).

Network availability has been poor and intermittent ever since.

I wrote a request for assistance with the problem this morning to their [email protected] address and wrote a message on the MTN Coverage Helpdesk thread here on MyBB about it too.

I called the 083 900 1212 number at about 18h00 yesterday and they told me that they cannot tell me what is going on with coverage in my place because their system (they did not say network) is offline at the moment.

I wonder if 'system' means more than just their wireless network because the wireless network is clearly having problems.
 
Same in Potchefstroom. No internet, no data, no blackberry. What a shame. The least I would have expected from MTN is a sms notifying us of the problem... and that they are sorting it out.
 
8ta possibly affected too..

I am receiving invalid MMI code as of around 9:30am this morning, cannot dial out, have full signal though.
8ta do not have a clue what I am on about and all was working fine previous to today. Could this be related to MTN outage / server issues as 8ta are backed by MTN network? OR is this off topic and unrelated? This is Durban.
 
I got my response from the same guy I spoke to yesterday evening on the help desk number (083 900 1212):

It is as follows:
"Please note that site T3760 Wilro Park W/Tower is currently down, MTN engineers are working on restoring the site".

Isolated case it seems. However, it is so coincidental with the Germiston outage reported by MyBB and the outages being reported in places elsewhere in the country.

No signal whatsoever on either my iPhone4 or Huawei E367! First we had no electricity for more than a day, then without water for almost a day and now this - no phone, no Internet, no email!

How long are the emigration queues at OR Tambo?

PS: I think I damaged my car in the pot hole in the road!
 
having trouble in East London also. Taken about 30 minutes posting this message. Pings to a local server look like a minefield! 200ms+ avg, 800ms, timeouts every 3rd one.
 
I'm so glad I don't operate a wireless network. I bet the lightning around causes major problems. Merry Christmas MTN and 8ta.
