MTN network problems (14 December 2011)

MTN's failure to be upfront, lack of communication and downright dishonesty in this matter is what really frustrates me! If only we had a consumer protection act that could force them to stop being so fkn rude to their customers...

was mentioning bad MTN signal to MTN guy yesterday, so he could pass on to the signal guys... he said ya, they'll look into the problem, but for now, more pressing matters, something like 500 sites having issues.... thats a looooot of towers to go down, on anybody's network.
Wonder what caused so much outage? Storm? Network failure? Server? Strikers?

:erm: There are more than 500 cellphone users...

MTN data has been more down than up the last few days, I've been sitting on very slow EDGE and most of the time no internet connection at all in my area where I normally fly on 3G on my Iphone.

This is Fourways / Douglasdale area.

I phoned MTN last night (from a Telkom line as obviously my 083 was down). A recording immediately informed me that they were experiencing network problems and that they are working on the problem and that it will be fixed shortly (yeah right!). I decided to hold for an operator, who answered within 3 rings, spoke English and was very friendly! Should I be shocked? She explained to me how to force my phone to GPRS/EDGE as only 3G was down and once again confirmed that the service should be restored within an hour (yeah right again!) Guess what? Within 20 minutes I had an 80% 3G signal again!

OK, so what happened? Why does MTN (a telecommunications company) not communicate with their users? With the Vodacom outage, Peter Uys (and the company) got major brownie points for the way that they handled it. Come on MTN, wake the **** up! I have been a loyal customer for the last 15 years and have always had good service. What's happening now?

PS: Even my pot hole got fixed this morning!

I am receiving invalid MMI code as of around 9:30am this morning, cannot dial out, have full signal though.
8ta do not have a clue what I am on about and all was working fine previous to today. Could this be related to MTN outage / server issues as 8ta are backed by MTN network? OR is this off topic and unrelated? This is Durban.

I had the same problem, 8ta roams on the Mtn network so we are also affected. Cape Town Winelands Area

aha. so this is why i couldn't make calls yesterday evening.

I did not notice the deteriotation in MTN's services. Maybe it is because I am used to MTN crappy network services. I am in Pretoria and I am on EDGE most of the time. If you are lucky to get a 3G signal it comes and goes. Moving over to Vodacom next year. It is a pity because I actually like the MTN contract deals, top-up features and other perks like MTN zone.
