Hi, I got a spare Vodacom HSDPA card from my brother and want to use it with an MTN sim card. The card picks up the MTN network, but gives an error 619 "Port is not connected" when I try to connect. I'm using the Vodacom included software (version 6) which works perfectly with a Vodacom prepaid card. Can this work and what do I need to do?

hi there

As far as I know those cards are not Network locked however it’s a troubleshooting issue than Network dependency.

try troubleshooting by creating an mtn profile, settings are as follows:

Network: #G preferred

Number: *99#

User & Pass: ( Leave it blank )

APN: internet/mymtn ( provisioning dependent )

Authentication protocol: PAP

hope this works ey?:D

Um...I have a voda card and use an MTN simcard.

I had the SAME error when I first started using it, called 555 I think - asked them to set it up for data, recieved the sms that my simcard was now data enabled and it worked perfectly!

It might just be a case that the simcard is not data enabled.

You can also put it in a cellphone, dial *123# send, chose the options to send phone internet settings to you - get the settings, and wait for the sms to confirm it's data enabled.

That solved my problem so hopefully it's the same for you!

Good luck!

Good evening,

Guys

Is it working let me know if it's not let me know

Thanks MTNDD

I can't get this to work either. Do you need a SIM that is 3G enabled? I've tried 2 SIMS that are definately data enabled but are probably about 2 years old. I also tried a Pay as you Go but I haven't enabled data (need to get that done).

On the Voda SW it just keeps saying Acquiring. If I scan for networks I see all of them as available but if I try to select MTN 3G it just keeps trying and trying but never switches from Voda

Good day,

You’re right the cards are not network locked

If that still doesn’t work go to control panel then go to phone and modems then click on properties and then go to advanced and enter the additional command string which is either AT+CGDCONT=,,"myMTN"<cr> or at+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet","",0,0 if the above doesn’t work

Thanks MTNDD

None of this is working for me:
  • I definitely using an MTN enabled SIM: Tried the '3G' one that I use in my 3G jarJar every day, and I also tried my bud's that he uses in his MTN datacard.
  • Datacard is not set up to ask for a PIN - presume it stays that way even when I disconnect VC Mobile Connect (VMC)
  • Have closed VMC, and turn off my wireless card (just in case)
  • Under controlPanel/Phones&Models I have identified the "Huawei 3G modem" which is 'not present' if I unplug my datacard, and present on 'COM12' if I plug it in - ie I definitely have the right one
  • I edit the properties of this modem so that the advanced string is as above (tried both options)
  • I then go to network connections and create a new DIAL-UP network connection: Number *99# (also tried *99***1#), no username and password
  • In the last step I did NOT have an opportunity to enter
    - Network: #G preferred
    - APN: internet/mymtn ( provisioning dependent )
    - Authentication protocol: PAP
perhaps that's my problem? Or is this not covered in the above 'advanced' modem string?
  • Then tried d.clicking the dial up connection and I get "Error 678: the remote computer did not respond..."
If I fire up VMC I get 'acquiring' in the status bar and no more. Whereas if I insert my VC SIM I get Acquiring, 3G, and then the VC dial-up network connection will work if clicked (ie VMC is only there for tracking traffic and stuff). Perhaps that helps explain things?

Any help would be MUCH apreciated. Need to figure this out B4 the VC contract ends, so I can take-up an MTN contract only if it works.
