MTN or Vodacom?

Use both. Unless you are planning on doing a contract .. then its about deals etc. Go with the obvious -- closest tower to you which you will predominantly use.

I switched to MTN and now have no 3G signal at home on my phone unless I stand next to the window in the bedroom. Calls drop all the time and the signal is terrible. Vodacom coverage is much better here. I am in Rondebosch, Cape Town.

Vodacom for me, but their coverage sucks big-time in Phokeng, basically you need to seek higher ground if you want to get a signal. But I guess it all depends where you are in terms of coverage.

I am on CellC and was considering moving to VC as well, but all this Iphone 4 nonsense is putting me off (silly, I know) and my gf is on MTN and I can't remember of any problems she has ever had. Only reason I want to move away, is because of signal at my home. Lost to many good phones because of poor signal. :)

Vodacom.

MTN's well publicised billing issues are still not completely resolved and their coverage in Cape Town Southern Suburbs has taken a huge hit over the last few months for some strange reason, especially indoors. EDGE is the order of the day and disconnections are common. Yesterday I couldn't keep a connection for more than a minute or two.

Last two days EDGE has been the only option in the CBD, .. 3G signal has been fluctuating again every few minutes so either they are doing upgrades(again) or someone's screwed with the tower. Lets hope its service upgrades. Vodacom's 3G is working fine :o

In terms of coverage I guess Vodacom takes the lead cause these guys took all the nice spots for towers first. I did have problems with my MTN coverage but they did sort it out abit for me.

Speed wise : Both push the same thou network load during peak hours resulted in Vodacom holding up. Thou funny story: I found myself opposite a MTN tower no so long ago and did a speed test with a HSPA device,my result was around 2MBps hmm?

Customer care service: I find Vodacom easy to understand and get though, after all these guys have their own 155 data line. MTN is there ,but not all there if you get what i mean.

Got a contract with both of them and so far so good.:)...thou at the moment i use Telkom Mobile for internet ...wattt? Nobody is using it!:Dfor now

MTN, Vodacom have the worst customer service I've ever experienced in my life (I'm pretty easy going but Voda'care' made me that angry). I always say they're both bad (because they are, anyone who thinks one or the other is genuinely good is crazy) but in the end I choose the one who has messed up less and MTN easily win. I've been with them for 8 years now on contract and yes some issues but nothing so bad I would ever consider porting again (I had a vodacom contract for two years between). Also MTN data coverage is far, far superior to Vodacom. And on a global level the money MTN rip me off for goes back into the SA economy, with Vodacom you're helping to make the British that much richer.

About the data thing, I think it is only because you have a blackberry. The only problem mtn gave me was the data billing thing. But atleast I could use netlimiter to check my data usage

fair enough, im a MTN campaigner, but i have both as a test rule and MTN shines, speed and coverage- remember that i hit coverage not just in roodepoort but in Mpumalanga and Midrand.

MTN ALL the way. MTN has EDGE everywhere!!!! If you don't have 3G you WILL have EDGE. Vodacom if you don't have 3G you WILL have GPRS. I travelled to JHB from Durban and only once got EDGE with vodacom and it was in the middle of nowhere.....

MTN is the best network. You can't go wrong.

I also agree. MTN does seem to have Edge everywhere, but with Vodacom it's either unreliable 3G or GPRS. The MTN signal is also rock solid and stable even though MTN 3G seems slower to me than Vodacom's.

Well if you have a branch near you, they are always helpful. I don't know if the billing thing is sorted out as yet, but atleast the out of bundle thing has dropped.

Which is where I spend most of my time. :)

So true.

MTN is OK, as long as you don't mind that they do not have any Customer Service.

Never really needed their customer service. I know about the billing thing, but mine(i pay the gf's bill as well) was sorted without me having to call them or anything.

Vodacom has EDGE everywhere, the only reason you dont see it is coz 3G doesnt go down like on MTN :p

MTN has billing issues and poor customer service...
