MTN reveals plans for mobile broadband network

I will shift to MTN ASAP if they reduce the 3G data bundle cost.

do we know who the chick in the pic is yet :D

I tested the speed at our FinDir's house last week... signal 'good', ping >100.
but download speed was >4.5Mbps on several speed tests. very nice,
upload still the 'normal' +-1Mbps, with B970 no external antenna.
So getting there. While most of us can't make use of the 'fast' speed with existing modems yet, even if the tower is enabled, I'm guessing the increased capabilites of the towers & network, should make for faster average speeds for more users on that tower.
Hopefully more users will eventually = lower tariffs

OK .. enough of the speed increases already .. bring on the competitive data bundle cost, we know 3g is a gazzillion times faster than ADSL in South Africa, but we cant use it at the current rates .. how about an 80% drop in the cost, and then you'll really see us flock ... 21Mbps is plenty fast enough .. no need to throw more money at upgrades, rather subsidise the data cost ...

I dunno why mybb keeps posting these threads, we are all aware of what is happening already with regards to the data speed, there is nothing new here, its the same article and it just gives people yet another platform to call for price cuts.

All this yet, my mom who live about 3km's from Loftus doesn't even get proper EDGE speeds. She wants to get ADSL now because the MTN data is just not reliable enough.

Could be a penetration issue, would you say there are buildings perhaps blocking line of sight from the site we have at loftus stadium? Pretoria, when i dealt with it coverage wise, i always felt to be rather finicy and tricky to deal with given the terrain, oh and plus the peope are ssssssso much more angry than in JhB, i think its the fact that they are 2 degrees hotter pretty much at all times huh? :)

you sound like someone who works for a MTN or Vodacom

This sounds like the CD-ROM speed race we had a few years ago.....4...8...12....16...24....32...40....48....56....woa.....reverse....48...
Hopefully they will reach that glass ceiling soon.

She does unfortunately not have line of sight to the stadium so she won't be able to get the advatage of this 21Mb/s offer, but there are other towers in the are to which she has got line of site, but not one of the - I think - 3 or 4 towers are 3G enabled so she needs to use an extrenal antenna to connect to another tower in the city centre direction and she can only get a poor EDGE service. So I think that this is just poor from you guys!

Yes, he does work for MTN.

Indeed, if you have a problem with the coverage level please report it and they will send a guy out there to check on this. Our virtual maps only provide a prediction of what the coverage should be, it doesnt take into account the amount of trees or how thick the buildings are etc etc, therefor we rely on you to advise us- "look, theres a problem in this area".

That sounds like a good speed. I wished i had that speed at a fair price, here.

MTN sucks. It would be nice if I could actually hear what message people are leaving on my voicemail. My voicemail messages are usually quite garbled... and if i reply the message it's consistently garbled which would indicate the problem is there when the messages are recorded, not when they are played.

Changing back to Vodacom in October 2010 :(
