MTN says it suffered a data breach

I'm wondering this also.

I mailed them and was like "I'd like a report of the impact and whether I have been affected".

Radio silence.

As a small business owner providing software/systems I need to be worried about hacks. There's supposed to be rules/laws in place and if MTN doesn't have to follow them does that mean I don't need to also? Or does it only count if you are small fry?

You are small fry - you cannot bribe, a few people even couple of months, and drag the investigation out, for a long enough period, that the cost of the investigation, becomes prohibitive, then investigation effectively becomes a "cold case"

"MTN Group has notified customers"

I received no notification which is in breach of the POPIA Act.

But hey they so far up the anc's butt they are untouchable.

with the joke of systems they have, unsurprising.

Not so much a Joke , as their infinite wisdom to outsource their entire system to India. They rather have someone in another country do their billing and ordering system and complain when shytes go south, now they are likely at the mercy of them again with certain aspects of the system and hacking investigation.....lol bunch of clowns.....

I wonder if it's something similar to Maxtra ... iykyk

And if you don't know... Mirror Trading Internationals "backend system" was super insecure... you merely need to sign up (you could find a referral name all over the intershits as people were peddling that HARD) and not even a real email address. Once in you could just change numbers in the query string in your browser to see other users deposits, withdrawals, downlines, etc etc.
