MTN hacked

MTN Group has notified customers that it suffered a data breach that exposed the private data of some people in certain markets.

“An unknown third-party has claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of our systems,” MTN said.

What information about us can possibly leak that isn't already on the dark web?

No idea, really, there have been so many data breaches in this country that anybody who earns money has their data floating around the dark, and not so dark webs already.

If government obtained all the breached data sets that are in the wild, cross referenced them all. They would probably have a more up to date, and accurate data set of all South Africans than they currently have.

I do have a very worrying Payment labeled document on file by them that if came out will cause the Viewer/s to have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Has any companies who have had data leaks or hacks been fined anything significant?

Every week it's a other hack or leak etc. Nothing ever happens. So is there any real reason for companies to actually care?

Involving SAPS?

Nice and vague "the private data of some people in certain markets."

What is that supposed to mean? I'm guessing it's everyone's data everywhere.

Would this classify as a POPIA breach? If so, aren't they supposed to inform any and all affected parties directly? Like all customers should get a mail/message with the information about the breach?

Validate existing information, for example now they know your mtn number for a possible sim swap target to get your bank otp if they only had your name and id number for the bank account.

I'm thinking that is going to be the least of their worries if the stories are true
