MTN shows healthy data growth

I dont think it was a mistake, build the network from the ground up....
EDGE/GPRS is also more affordable. Up until recently it was quite fast & useable too.

Maintaining 3G datacards at an artificially high level or delaying their release is also counter-productive. These are cheap as chips in Europe, especially since mobile broadband is taking off there (finally).

Kudos to rpm for extracting that info from MTN - it allows for an interesting national coverage comparison to be made between Vodacom's HSPA [4000+ base-stations] and MTN's HSPA|3G-R99 [1379 base-stations], MTN made a big strategic mistake by deciding to concentrate on EDGE rollout instead of 3G rollout.

I disagree. Rolling out EDGE was a great decision. I've been to many places where there is no 3G/HSDPA from either Vodacom or MTN, however, MTN has EDGE (about 90% of the time). Its always great to get your email at 12kb/s while watching other people struggle at 5kb ;)

IMO EDGE should primarily have been rolled out in more rural areas, and 3G [now HSPA] should have received much more attention in urban areas instead of EDGE.

Also, more importantly, EDGE is 2.75G and still constrained by timeslot limitations - which are significant since the 2G networks are primarily used for carrying voice traffic and therefore not ideal for carrying data traffic.
