MTN slashes cell costs

Wonderful, so now everyone buying R10 prepaid airtime gets cheaper costs but everyone forking out R150 odd a month for a contract gets no cut? :p

When number portability kicks in I'll probably switch to MTN...

The article does not say that sms costs have been dropped too.
This is a good move cause it was totally unfair that the poor had to fork out the highest call costs.

I can't wait to see regulations and see if icasa can bite.. esp telkom. I wonder if this has to do with cellular penetration reaching near saturation and numberportability would be basically they way to get newer users.. ie better cost, perks etc

Well at least they did not go the VAS route as stated before.

Any bets that they will still be raking in massive profits with the lower prices?

And still no reduction on data. Wonder if that will happen at all.

Hopefully a glimpse of things to come, remember there was no light at the end of a very dark tunnel a year ago! I say bring it on, this is what decent regulation (still a way to go) and competition can achieve.

After looking on their website, it seems this offering is too restricted.
See http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=280426
You only get discounted call rates if you airtime balance is lower than R15 and only if you used the R10 voucher to recharge. The airtime also expires after 20 days.

Seems MTN is pulling a Telkom on us.

Cant wait to see comparisons on pricing, all nicely laid out for lazy sods like myself.
,,,drop to R1.99 per minute (including VAT) for all customers on the Call Per Second package, from the previous price of R3.20.

The new tariff structure will be effective immediately for pre-paid customers on Call Per Second and Call Per Second Plus packages with no special subscription, starter pack or cell number required.

On the face of it, it looks like GREAT NEWS for the folks living close to the bread line. 2 bucks a minute is still 2 bucks a minute though but its pointing the right way.

OMW .. talk about fine print to get headline that rocks socks. Icasa better regulate then.

When a Cell Phone Call becomes cheaper than a normal land line call, then I will consider using it.
Until then my cell phone sits on my desk in case of urgent business or family calls where a normal telephone is not an option.
