MTN slashes cell costs

You only get discounted call rates if you airtime balance is lower than R15 and only if you used the R10 voucher to recharge. The airtime also expires after 20 days.

Oh FFS!

Well, at least it is in the right direction. With any luck, Cell C and Vodacom will follow suit and maybe even try to one-up MTN... a little optimistic, but hey!

So basically everyone is going to go out and instead of topping up once a month with a R100 voucher they'll buy 10 X R10 vouchers and keep their airtime under the prescribed amount...

It seems to me like the guy who wrote the article doesnt know how the new pricing works. He seems to suggest that MTN has reduced prices and then because of that introduce the R10 voucher. In reality, the R10 voucher is integral in getting the discount. Also dont know how you can get a figure of 40% reduction. A average MTN customer spends R160 odd a month (so I read) - a maximum of R15 of that is discounted at 40% -> so he'll now be spending R9 instead of R15 a cut of R6 making it R154 a month.. a mere 3.75% discount.

What is going on with all the spin with stats?

and..

You can only use it once a month

If you recharge more than once with a R10 Recharge Voucher in any given 30 day period, then you will not be charged the call rates as stated above. You will be billed according to your default price plan (Call per Second, PayBack, Classic and Call per Second Plus).

O/T: The MTN website renders out quite terribly in FireFox. Half the images don't load, content isn't aligned properly. Very unprofessional.

yes i can c it now, vodacom announces that prepaid users with over R20 air time balance every alterntate full moon, when security guards are on strike, and the celphone user is currently facing a north west direction gets a discount of 41% on calls.

i cant wait.

Exactly SpinDrift, also, with the voucher being valid for only 20 days, and you can only use the "cheap" rates once every 30 days, you sit 10 days using old expensive prices.

Oh, well, I already have 6 simcards because you can only load 1 data bundle every 30 days. Now MTN will sell even more simcards to people wishing to load multiple R10 vouchers to make use of the lower call rates.

What I also don't get is that on the site they have a "peak" call rate of R2.99 and a "standard" rate of R1.99 (the figure that the article states) and then the "off peak" rate. So what's the difference between "peak" and "standard"?

bleh, I feel like such a toss for taking the news headline at face value. Its a SA telecoms company, I should know better, and someone please kick the journo in the nuts.

its a start.....telkom should consider reducing costs for cell calls .....point is....these days its cheaper to call overseas then to call your neighbor (on a cell phone that is)

Have a look here : http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=6234

This is across the board for the Call Per Second price-plan, not just for R10 vouchers.

However, its still cheaper per minute on plain ol' PAYG Classic (but then not billed per second). In other words, it only helps people who make short calls...

Luckily for MTN , these same people prolly dont have internet access to find out the truth behind this amazing deal.

Then again , they could be MWEB subbies.

That link does not work. I get
"An error has occurred. Please try again in a short while - 2006/06/14 06:24:07 PM"
Maybe the problem is temporary or they are updating the site.

Wrong info...

I went through the MTN website and called customer services...

TRUTH:

The figures given in the article are correct ALL THE TIME, but, if you recharge with the R10 card, you get charged MORE! check the PricePlans on the MTN website...

It is as good as it sounds, but as far as I'm concerned, it could still have been better, they should've reduced SMS costs.

Money making swines...

Could these price reductions have anything to do with the new Virgin Mobile service startup NEXT WEEK!?
