MTN stops SMS competition

They decided to quit while they were ahead.
They must have made millions though. MTN will probably do the same next year.

They actually closed it because of the "insider information" scandal. People knew how to cheat the competition....
Well thats whats I heard...

You know, when the cost of litigation becomes one of your routine costs of running your business ... :) competitions like these make you a bundle of profit anyway.

the lure of easy cash must have clouded the cellular giant’s judgment.
Depends on your definition of clouded... it may have enhanced it. Why don't I just run a competition to win a house in Soweto - SMS' costs R5 and the millionth SMS wins the house...

Yeah, so do I get my money back?

If you entered this bullsh#t in the first place then you're an idiot. When will people learn that these types of "competitions" in Africa from the TV phone ins to the SMS nonsense are derived for one purpose and one purpose only - to hurt the public interest. Besides the extremely high cost of cellular calls you then go and give them more money by entering a R7,50/sms scam. R7,50!! To your own network provider!!

I don't see the hurt in these competitions if they are indeed totally random and not dependant upon the amount if SmS's you send in.

The problem is not that people are idiots - "normally" when an SMS competition is advertised and even if it says that an entry costs R7.50 people will enter because they at least stand a chance of 1/[however many entries are received]. The MTN competition was advertised on TV and did not tell you that winners would be those who had sent in most sms's. Only once you had sent your first sms at R7.50 did they tell you this...

about blo#dy time! Although they may have made millions in the competition, the loss of revenue due to consumer dissatisfaction/distrust could negate this profit

Just heard an interview with one of te guys from MTN on 702 and the only positive thing I took from it was the hint of MTN getting iPhones, sure the podcast will be available soon check the 702 website.

But really running a competition with prizes funded by MTN clients shear brilliance, but it's not like they are the only one's doing it, gift my ASS ! So glad I'm leaving MTN when the iPhone 3GS comes out, I've been a client for theirs for almost 8 years and have never received so much as a thank you for the R115000 worth of subscriptions alone I've poured into their coffers.

they don't really care, they made 100's of millions in this "competition"... maybe they decided to stop it, as it was the max amount of money their bank account could take?
