MTN subscriber numbers released: 30 September 2011

MTN, another South African company who's African and global operations have been funded by ordinary South African citizens, while we see little to no benefit at home. MTN South Africa has among the highest call, SMS and data rates in the entire MTN Group.

The rest of Africa should thank us for subsidizing their telecoms costs.

I doubt we "subsidise" what MTN charges in other countries. They are just capable of raping us for more cause the poor consumers here can afford to spend more of their income on telecommunications, etc.

You'd be surprised. In the very best case, MTN South Africa has paid for a large portion of the initial capital expenditure to set up the network in each of these countries. In the worst case, the profits that MTN rakes in from RSA is being taken out of the country and ploughed into the networks of MTN's other operations. And we all know that the profit that MTN rakes in each year is no small number. Double Digit billions from South Africa alone. What do you think happens to this money?
