MTN says that its planned network sharing agreement with Telkom Mobile will help it to create a 4G data network

Except that MTN do have spectrum that can be used to convert those towers... with minimal costs involved.

Nope, the key is telkoms 1800 spectrum.mtn will continue to push their 1800 lte with the addition of telkoms channels

I don't see Telkom giving anything to MTN
Telkom are allowing MTN to take over management of Telkom Mobile network facilities and for an outright network sharing to take place. This allows Telkom Mobile to operate essentially as a retail operation that is able to offer converged offerings without exposing Telkom to mobile sector risk ("de-risking") if this is paired with moves to remove risk within the fixed line asset base of Telkom and the resolution of the labour problem at Telkom you have a telecommunications company that: (i) is functioning properly in the converged space; (ii) is able to properly separate wholesale and retail operation (as required by the Comp Comm settlement); (iii) has properly ring-fenced and managed risk; (iv) has access to NGN supporting infrastructure in the LTE space and fixed line space - the MSAN rollout projects; (v) has critical mass on the low ARPU customer base on Sonke without the risks of network management and has a critical mass of business customers

So no I see this as a massive win for Telkom and a little win for MTN.

for the same reasons that "economic interests" was originally included in the protection of corruption bill and for the same reason that the BAUTs all gave large sums of money to the ICT Indaba
