MTN announces Covid-19 vaccine mandate

MTN says that it will implement a mandatory vaccination policy for staff from January 2022, as part of its commitment to protect the health and safety of its people and workplaces, and contribute towards the rate of Covid-19 vaccinations across its markets in Africa.

"The science is clear. Vaccination against Covid-19 reduces rates of serious infections, hospitalisation, and death," said MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita.

Hypothetically, if an employee has a severe adverse affect to the vaccine, is the employer held liable in any way?

I assume this would be in the policy i.e. compensation etc.

It would probably be a Workman's Compensation case.

Edit: I should read more.

From the Discovery FAQ:
The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, under which Discovery is registered, also provides for assistance with medical expenses and loss of income in relation to certain adverse events as a result of vaccination.
Further, a person is able to claim from the Coronavirus COVID-19 Vaccine Injury No-fault Compensation Scheme established in April 2021 under the Regulations issued under the Disaster Management Act if that person has a severe injury resulting in permanent or significant injury or serious harm to a person’s health. The injury must be causal - related to vaccination using a COVID-19 vaccine in terms of the regulations.

How dare MTN take on the responsibility of protecting the majority of their workforce against the selfish few. Unacceptable?
Do you really think big companies all of a sudden care about the health and well being of their staff??
What I see in front of me is the opportunity to reduce staff numbers "legally". Try that any other way in SA and see what happens.

Deploy the vaccine helicopters! Anti-vax parasites beter go hide in a hole away from society. Rationality is on the way!

What I see in front of me is big companies attempting to normalize the climate so that they can go back to earning themselves a living. We all want that. The madness must end.

I reckon that in a next step government will make vaccination a requirement for all government employees and their suppliers similar to what the US did. Quite possibly also requiring it for access to public buildings such as home affairs, the traffic department, etc.

I mean it was accepted in the land of the free and the home of the brave :p

The companies currently implementing these policies have never had it better.

They are also mon-manufacturing companies and their staff are easy to replace by AI. 4th IR here we come.

Nope, sorry. It was accepted, challenged and put on hold via courts. The courts also ruled that the govt has no right to influence HR policies of their contractors.

Big corporates retrench all the time. All the big banks have had major retrenchments in the last few years. They don't need an excuse.

You're right, they probably don't care about their staff but I'm sure they'd rather not lose productivity hours because Marikie, Themba and Akshay are in hospital with COVID.

Edit: Typos
