Okay, so here is the short version of the story:
My MTN contract came up for renewal in June 2020. I decided to wait it out as I wanted an iPhone 12.
When the iPhone 12 became available in December I managed to secure one for an MTN upgrade at the iStore.
On the day of the upgrade I was at the store at 8h00 just to learn that the MTN system was down. I signed all the paperwork but was asked to leave without the phone as the iStore clerk explained he cannot give me the phone until the contract has been successfully captured on MTN's system.
At around 18h00 that evening I received a call from the iStore telling me everything is done and I can come and collect my phone.
At collection the iStore clerk explained to me that I will get several SMS's from MTN confirming the contract renewal.

It is now almost 6 weeks later. I have not received a single SMS and the MyMTN app still shows me as ready for an upgrade with the details of my old contract. The airtime that was loaded now in January is also still that of my old contract.

It would therefore appear as if the iStore gave me the iPhone12 but that the new contract details was never properly loaded on the MTN system.

I know the right thing to do is to go back to iStore and enquire.
Part of me (the devil on my left shoulder) is wondering what will happen if I go to MTN and downgrade my contract to a SIM package only. I would therefore have been gifted an iPhone12 by the iStore.

When will someone wake up and discover the mistake?

Good evening,

Have you gone in store and fixed the system mistake? Please email me your number so I can check why the contract did not kick in. francois.vanriet@mtn. com

Um

One of my MTN upgrades were also messed up and they've never picked it up. I've also upgraded twice since then. As long as I have approved and signed the necessary paperwork, if they screw it up, it is not my problem.

Got a Samsung S7 + Gear S2 for around R150 per month.
