MultiChoice and DVB-T2

It all sounds good but...How about they drop the f'n price on their equipment and plans. This company is rich beyond words yet they provide the worse TV service for Africans. Why the hell do we get feeds from India/Middle East.

Company worth billions of Rands can't afford to get us some more premium continent/channels with less repeats? Why not Multi-Choice?

Can't blame this one on Telkom...

I agree, I refuse to pay R600 pm for crappy service loaded, absolutely loaded with ads. I voted against Monochoice with my wallet.

Does this mean I should hold out on getting a PVR? What will be different/better on DVB-T2?

Won't subscribe again until I can create my own bouquet. Period

I unsubbed too :)

I don't think they'll ever let you choose your own bouquets. The problem with me is i LOVE F1 and motogp + superbikes, so you're kinda held ransom by multichoice to pay top dollar to watch sport every alternative weekend, hardly seems right innit?

Another view is that MC intends to offer custom local broadcasts provincially controlled and distributed from MC head office.

DVB-T2 is somewhat different from DStv's DVB-S broadcasts in that you'll pick up the signal with an antenna and set top box (kinda like M-Net) rather than a dish and decoder. This suggests that interference due to weather effects won't be such a problem.

Details on what kind of channels they'll be offering are scant sadly, but there won't be as many channels on the DVB-T2 broadcast as on the current satellite broadcast.

Thanks Jan. Do you have any opinions on HDD based recorders which ignores the recently enabled "Copy once" flag on DSTV channels. I used to take recorded content with me while travelling for viewing on my phone. Now you can't get the content off the HDD any more.

Just up DSTv to DVB-S2 and forget about DVB-T - its old school.

Strange that the biggest DVB-S user in the country prefers DVB-T2 for certain things. Wonder why, if DVB-S2 is so much superior in all respects.

Maybe it's because they'll be able to reach a larger audience with DVB-T2 as most of the country won't/can't go for satellite?

Nope - lots of repeaters, lots of set top boxes, lots of yagi aerials and even loads more money will be required compared to a simple R500 decoder+dish+installation.

DVB-T* is old and dead.

Aint the taxpayer going to pay for all of that as well as subsidise the the decoders for the masses? Making DVB-T* more affordable for the masses?

What a waste - we already have Major Tom floating in a tin can way up in the air beaming down DVB-S love for all of us. Why blow millions if not billions on last century style terrestrial broadcasts.

You need new projects to create Tenders so the so called 'elite' can steal more money from hardworking South Africans :(

I guess from a business stance it makes sense. DTT is going to happen. It will replace the current analogue systems forcing the majority of the country to move over. Not everyone will be willing to get a decoder and satellite. Might as well try to get as big of a slice of the pie as possible.

I have seen a whole lot of dishes in the local squatter camp - all aligned with the DSTv tin in the sky. Even before DTT goes live it has already blown the budget if you compare it to space on PAS7/10 (DSTv) or SES Astra (TopTV).

The problem with me ranting about it here is that everyone else on this forum likes new gadgets and something new - for them DTT is a new toy. But as a practical solution I think it sucks.

The goal of DTT is to free up the frequency spectrum currently being wasted by inefficient analogue broadcasts. This is happening internationally and has nothing to do with the corrupt ANC trying to steal more money. I have no doubt they will do so in any case, it's just not the primary reason for the switch-over.

Slightly OT, does anyone know if DVB-T2 is backwards compatible with DVB-T? I.e. will my DVB-T receiver pick up and decode DVB-T2 signals?

Rouxenator, I can't remember the details, but doesn't DVB-T2 have a LOT more capacity than DVB-S2, like hundreds of HD channels compared to tens. IIRC, terrestrial, for whatever reason, can broadcast many GBps more than satellite, resulting in less compression and clearer pictures. Might be something to do with gain. I'm not saying that satellite is better than terrestrial, or visa versa, but IIRC they're both still useful in their niche, and neither can efficiently replace the other. Now if we could get a technical article on the difference, pros and cons of the two system, we wouldn't have to guess ;).
