MultiChoice and DVB-T2

There are benefits to terrestrial broadcasts. For one it'll fare better than satellite during heavy storms.

Outside of the discussions about just switching off terrestrial broadcasts, using some tax money to switch South Africa over to DTT will mean freeing up some precious bandwidth which can then be used to roll out LTE (provided ICASA handles the spectrum allocation in a sane manner).

Thanks Jan. Do you have any opinions on HDD based recorders which ignores the recently enabled "Copy once" flag on DSTV channels. I used to take recorded content with me while travelling for viewing on my phone. Now you can't get the content off the HDD any more.

I do have opinions on this but it's probably best that I don't share them in an official capacity. I'll try to remember to reply on my personal account later :-).

Switching off all terrestrial broadcasts will free up even more spectrum. While weather might affect transmissions from satellite in RARE occasion a lot of people will find them on themselves on the wrong side of the digital cliff after switch over. While they may have been OK with a snowy analogue picture a digital decoder will not have a picture unless the signal is pretty solid.

Carefull though. With all this freed up spectrum, Juliass will be able to pick up your thoughts :p
