The only real chance of the average SA public having a choice other than DSTv lies in more Free To Air channels through digital broadcasting. But, that also looks dead. When are we going to move to digital signal. When are the decoders going to be available?
Back to the real issue with this article. Multichoice helping TopTV just smells fishy no matter what the details are.
There are no details of how this help will be provided. My guess is that it will be in a hegemonic way that simply serves Multichoices interest, which is to maintain its monopoly while TopTV barely survives for the next 20 years.
If Multichoice wants to provide real help to TopTV, it should offer TopTV broadcast rights for premuim sports at discounted prices, making it more affordable for the average South African to watch live premium sports.
Although this happened in the UK via state arm-twisting of BSkyB so that Virgin and other satellite TV providers can also broadcast sports, we know this aint gonna happen in SA.
ICASA where are you in this and ODM, you said you don't need sport to be successful, now look where you are.
DSTv's Compact bouquet is the largest bouquet in terms of subscription numbers because of one thing.
Think about it.
No sport, no life TopTV.
