MultiChoice SA CEO Mark Rayner explains DStv standalone streaming service

So same or more pm essentially and you get that low res kak stream?

I'm very disappointed. Had hoped they would at least drop the full bouquet to R499 on streaming only.
All this build up for nothing.

I think the general logic behind this is that you pay for the content, not how it is delivered.

The only way they will be able to lower the price is if every subscriber moved over to the streaming service, which means they can switch off the satellite transceivers and thereby lower their operational costs.

Not seeing this scenario happening anytime soon though on a sparsely connected continent.

I'm also just streaming it basically on my side in other room outside as it is just easier for me that way. I really hope they don't mean you have to sign up for either or.

Reading between the lines, it seems that they may stop bundling DStv Now with the satellite service when this launches, but they won't be adjusting the tariff to reflect the reduced service... If this is the case, then a lot of customers who share login details will drop the service totally.

Which choice hurts my bank account the least ?

A Multi(ple)Choice Question

1. DSTV over satellite
2. DSTV through streaming over my internet
3. No DSTV :)

I think I made my choice

If thats the case they've really shot themselves in the foot. Unfortunately they've demonstrated today that their fingers are so far off the pulse they may in fact be contemplating such a move.

It really is a question that needs to be asked.

What I get from this is that you don't need a smartcard to get the full DSTV package.

Still sucks, streaming only service should be cheaper.

So . . . this streaming service . . . does include ads and repeats?
Yep and they even put banner ads in the middle of your live programming.

It's like the ads you get for free on YouTube and Twitch, except they are unskippable and you get the privilege of paying for them.

What is so difficult to understand.
Get a standalone Supersport 1 streaming only option for sub R300 and you will get n ton of subscribers.
To keep on bundling packages is a recipy for failure.

There is no saving to them. If anything streaming is more expensive.

But they are like Telkom at the beginning of the ADSL phase and are charging full price, they should subsidise the costs and get millions of subscribers.

It is all about scaling and they have the cash to do it.
