When DStv cost about R900 per month for Premium satellite service with free DStv Now streaming included, people cancelled their services at an alarming rate because they said it was too expensive.

Fast forward to now, when they relaunch the same service, but now you can select either satellite OR streaming, still at about R900 per month. Do they really expect people to queue for this? WTF are they smoking?

They should create a stand alone streaming service for less than R500. That would be the way. And start phasing out satellite services if it is more expensive to run. They are trying to compete with Netflix but with a massive premium on the price.

Phasing out isn't something you can do. It costs just as much to provide it to one than to hundreds of millions so it's either keeping it or canning it. Scaling satellite actually makes it cheaper to provide per subscriber but streaming adds extra costs for every subscriber seeing as multicasting never became a thing.

How is this different than what Netflix offers, except for live sport? When that streaming only is officially launched I will check that price on their website and then check Netflix's price and compare them regarding content and price. I will probably then choose Netflix and not DSTV, so they are competing for the same market.

Simply because Nerflix doesn't offer the same content. Neither does Disney nor Apple or anyone else. Streaming is actually becoming a quagmire where you have to subscribe to multiple services over the year. It's ironic how many people using these services still end up pirating when they claimed that they wouldn't need to if it was just offered to them.

It isn't less for them. That's the point. Tell you what. If they make it one or the other they'd be shooting themselves in the foot as their streaming clients are piggybacking off the regular ones. In fact many of the regular ones are selling it on to save some cash.

Now if they reduced it by say 25% and then make you choose your access medium they'd gain streaming customers as well as some of the regular ones they lost.

But Mark Rayner, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, said in an interview with TechCentral on Wednesday that the company decided not to introduce separate price plans for the dishless product as this would have added complexity for consumers.

This is why people love Multichoice. They're always thinking of consumers. Rather than saddle customers with the complexity of paying less and saving money they instead chose the simplicity of keeping prices unchanged thus burdening the company with higher profits. True saints.

Wow this took a year to put together. Sounds like a government department has done it. What is the difference between this and using your dad's account?

I suppose the difference is that both you and the DSTV account you were using for streaming will now have to pay separately.
