MultiChoice has announced it will not be carrying adult content on its pay TV channels, after an outcry from the South African public over the possibility of the move.

The provider of pay-television service DStv said on Thursday evening that the research it had conducted into the area has been "misinterpreted".

Nolo Letele, Group CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, said the research survey conducted in February 2010 focussed on adult content, "since some competitors about to launch in South Africa may or may not include adult channels on their services".

Two new pay-TV operators will launch soon to end MultiChoice's long monopoly over digital satellite TV, after many years of commercial and legal wrangling.

On Digital Media (ODM) and Super 5 Media (the latter is what emerged from the now-defunct Telkom Media) are both set to launch pay-TV offerings in 2010, according to TechCentral.

MultiChoice's general manager Jackie Rakitla previously told the media that the company was doing research "to determine the extent of interest in porn, and we're looking at the feasibility of implementing such a service".

The move inspired an outcry from religious groups, feminists and even the opposition of government ministers.

However, on Wednesday MultiChoice said the research indicated that a significant portion of subscribers were against adult channels, while some were indifferent to it and another significant section positive.

I don't do dstv so it matter little to me but it really annoys me that there was no research done on whether consumers wanted the credit card religious filth channels but because a few thousand don't want porn .....

I couldn't agree with you more. Religion is the deadliest poison there is, far more damaging to society and humanity than that porn crap.

Damn femnazis

You'd have to be a dunce to pay even more to watch porn on DSTV

Depends on what porn they offered :D, HD porn would have been sweet. Most of us blow money on so much crap like alcohol, cigi's, junk food what is wrong with a bit of hd porn dammit alan :D.

Couldn't agree more. I don't recall being asked my opinion on the matter? Does anyone else? To me it sounds like the survey they did was done on a bunch of fundamentalist conservatives rather than the majority of their paying subscribers.

Oh well, there goes liberalism, hello 'fraidy-cat tail-between-legs don't-toe-the-line media.

I dont think they did a survey, I think they got 20 000 complaints and decided that is the majority of people lets not do it...

I still don't see the problem if it's subscription based, if you dont want it, don't subscribe? It's not like you or your kids will accidentally surf to the channel or accidentally call MultiChoice and request an added service (Porn Channel) and accidentally verify your credentials and accidentally not see it on your bill... If it is controlled properly, then why not? People are use to eTv porn that is freely watchable by children and well it won't be the same... Hopefully it will be much more hardcore :p

I hope the kids of all the moaners are viewing porn on their cellphones and on the internet. That would be the ultimate fail.

peeps will prob. get a bigger rise from the SyFy channel ... DSTV, where is that research????

i think in the long-term, this is a good decision.
there are enough adult shops and people can
also access porn online.

our country already has a high enough rate of
rape, and porn further objectifies women's
bodies

People who can't read should be BANNED from posting on this forum !

what exactly is your problem?

Can you read ?

There is no correlation between porn and rape, Germany has hardcore porn on normal TV during the daytime, they don't even appear on the list of high rape countries.
This has been proven over and over again.

Please read the threads before posting rubbish.

personally, i think your perspective is rubbish, and honestly do not care if you disagree with me;

porn objectifies women's bodies and does nothing to create respect for women

now think wisely before you post...
