MultiChoice springs PVR surprise

and if multichoice do it themselves you wouldnt need the connection to update the guide as it would be piped to the box digitally.

you only need adsl/modem etc on a windows mce machine to get guide data updates from the thrid party. If multichoice themselves supply the decoders/pvr's, then the guide will more than likely come over the air.

Being able to record full series and pause and rewind live tv... is astonishing!! ... fashion tv has never been the same...uhm soz i mean #23 soccer channel.

PS: yes werner is correct.... u only need a dsl connection or whatever connection to update your tv guide.

nice ;) u running in SA or in UK ? I need to upgrade my storage too, only sitting on 1x 200gb hdd. :/
 
uk at the moment...but will bring my toys back with me. You will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers first....
 
Anybody knows how to become a trial tester for MC ? I wouldn't mind testing their PVR with Video on Demand (through ADSL)?

I'll promise I'll give detailed feedback :-)

PS.
That's probably why Telkom wants their local bandwidth back, and why they might introduce capping on all bits and bytes in the near future :-(

Now, because the original post had BOTH references to IPTV and PVR technology being released and tested by Multichoice, doesn't it make sense to you that Kei was referring to the IPTV and PVR respectively as well?

Stop being a dumbass okay? I didn't try and attack you, but you attacking a buddy like that without fully comprehending the english language that was typed is unacceptable.

look, contrary to your belief my english is pretty much up to scratch, and I know the confusion that arose due to the original topic referring to both iptv and pvr. If you have a look back you will see my first post was ONLY to do with pvr's...that is where I had an opinion. The lines got blurred when telkom and their caps were mentioned in response to my post about pvr's (in a direct quote about pvr's may I add). So my question and clarification was valid, as telkom and their caps have got nothing to do with pvr's.

I am sure anybody reading this thread understood where the blurring had taken place, so no need for wise remarks from the peanut gallery, thanks mate.

Either way, it's getting boring arguing a moot point. I didnt attack anybody, so dont make it out to be a big us and them thing.
 
Being South Africa and Multi Choice I would imagine they are going to charge something like R500 a month for the privilege of having a PVR on top of our ridiculous DSTV subs...
 
I got a PVR - and the Ad skip doesnt work in SA because none of the broadcasters here broadcast the Ad markers. But you can FF over them, or Use Picture in Picture to watch something else why you are waiting :D Having said all that, I have since junked my DSTV subscription, so now I have archived all my DVDs to the PVR and play them back from there. The PVR I have runs of a custom Linux dist and uses Intervideo software. Neat. It also has a Irdeto2 Satellite decoder card, and that works quite kewl - u dont need a Satellite decoder - just the SIM card. And the EPG is much nicer...
My next strategy - get a Videoguard card and point my dish at Astra2A and subscribe to Sky Digital....
 
a bit OT: HDTV would be nice.......I can use my LCD projector to its full potential....believe me its amazing, ordered some HDTV dvd's from the US.
 
if you are handy with linux then the dreambox (dm5xx , dm7xx) is the one to go for as the system offers the ultimate in expansion for a pvr, user customisable screens (web servers, games, smb etc) as well as cam emulation. I havent seen the dvr830, so got no idea how it compares, but suffice to say the dreambox is already very highly regarded and has an active developers community

If you build your own, you should be able to get the whole lot done for under 5k, depending on the processor and mem you go for.
