MultiChoice's odd Dubai situation

They pay tax all right. It's just not called tax in Dubai. People who think UAE is tax free are doff
Sure they have VAT and some consumption and maybe rental taxes too, but no income tax like we have is my understanding?

What a nice life being a MC Exec... or any exec for a large multinational for that matter. Who do I sleep with to get that privilege?

Being based in Dubai, MultiChoice said, enables Mawela to be closer to the MultiChoice Africa management team and have more accessible travel into the rest of Africa.
So it's easier to travel around africa by living outside of it?

Anyway, this article isn't really surprising. Big companies doing things to limit tax isn't really something new.

You do know Dubai is a major international travel hub? So yes, it’s much easier to travel around Africa from Dubai than it is from SA.
Sadly seeing the demise of SAA I agree - we used to have a great hub here for African travel. Post SAA and post Covid who knows...

It will make sense if there is a big push into Africa and/or other international destinations. Mobility it greatly improved. It might give MC a little more attention from Europe. It does not take away the potential loss of tax revenue if this plays out as we foresee.

Yes.

Those are all excluding connecting flights. Yes, Dubai gives direct access to the top of Africa, but I am sure they could get connecting flights to those from SA if they needed to. I still think it's a weak argument to use when the real reason is clearly because Dubai is a tax haven for them.

Dubai is a great city. The Emirates has a lot going for it besides the tax benefits. It’s safe, there is always water and electricity, the people are friendly, it’s clean and there is a lot of good business to be made up there. The cost of living is very high though, and you get taxed in other ways. Children easily enjoy it too, there is a lot to do, although no real nature besides the desert (which is very beautiful). It’s an Arab city and the culture is something you either love or hate. Don’t go there if you like to be a typical South African though. If bending the rules, drinking, speeding, being selfish on the roads etc is your thing, you’ll quickly get put in your place.
