Hi Guys,

I need some help please ...
I want to buy (or build) a PC to connect to my Smart TV to basically use as a multimedia device but also a bit of day to day desktop PC activity.

I had a look at the ACER REVO I3 6100U 4 1TB at Incredible but 7k seems a bit much ...

Needs to have a nice size HDD and enough RAM, at least an I3 processor, a few USB ports, Windows OS, Wifi, HDMI and wireless keybord and mouse.

Any suggestions and/or advice please?

7k is actually the most reasonable price you can expect if you can't build it yourself.

You can get a Megatek i3 from Computer Mania, it'll have better specs and cost the same.

The alternative is to ask for a quote of the individual parts and ask for a discount but I can tell you it's gonna be more.

HP Microserver?

I use mine as a basic Win 7 PC as well as a NAS.

Basically any of the PC's here will do:

Desktop/HTPC

The above mentioned:

Dell OptiPlex 7040

Lenovo ThinkCentre M73

+1. Custom HTPC, NUC, Optiplex, Thinkcentre and Proliant all come to mind for the use case.

They are much better at power consumption and rather quiet. You will have limited USB support with these options. You can extend them, though, these have their own cons. Also, internal HDD capacity might be limited, but you can always expand it with external HDDs.

Heck, you could even go for RPi 3, but then you're stuck with Win 10 IOT Core...

Just don't get a HP MicroServer, they are old and slow.

Any of the in the page I linked to will work or you can build one yourself with the Pentium G4560 that has 10-bit HEVC hardware decoding.

Custom built should be under R5000.

Regarding power usage and an HTPC, I have old parts lying around so plan to diy a plex/smb share unit with no keyboard or monitor.

Anyway to have the unit boot at 5pm daily then shutdown at say 10pm, do this everyday, with osx its so easy.
Not surehow much power you'd save, maybe it'll use more?
Plan is to run Win7
2x 4TB hdd storing series and movies.

I just let my HTPC go into sleep mode after a couple of hours. It wakes up when I use the air mouse.
